Many people that are just beginning with collectible postage stamps enjoy the thrill and the challenge that comes with finding stamps that come from a variety of different time periods. There are also sophisticated hobbyists collecting collectible postage stamps that are rare or particularly valuable because their primary focus is placed on increasing the financial value of the collection that they are putting together. In other words, collectible postage stamps are capable of appealing to a wide variety of different people including young and old, serious or beginner, and for a variety of different reasons as well.

It should definitely be noted that the collection of collectible postage stamps differs greatly from the formal study of collectible postage stamps, which is a concept known as philately. Therefore, not all postage stamp collectors are philatelists, and not every philatelist is a postage stamp collector.

The History of Collectible Postage Stamps

The first ever postage stamp was issued back in the year 1840 in Britain. The stamp, which is known as the Penny Black, pictured an image of Queen Victoria, and it was printed without any perforations, which meant that it needed to be cut out from a single sheet in order to be used by the owner of the stamp.

Postage stamp collecting finally became a hobby in around 1860, and then around the 1920s is when the hobby really began to pick up steam. Stamps that were issued during this period of time do not generally carry very much value because they are still quite widely available today.

Collecting Facts for Collectible Postage Stamps

There are errors that are made when stamps are printed, and this will result in stamp images that are upside down or off center for example, and these collectible postage stamps tend to be the ones that greatly increase the value of the stamp. There are many collectors out there that are specifically looking for collectible postage stamps that contain these types of printing errors since they are rare and likely to fetch a higher price.

Many people that collect collectible postage stamps tend to focus on one specific type of stamp, like those issued by a certain nation for example. Some of the most popular collectible postage stamps are European stamps and Asian stamps for example because they feature stunning artistic qualities. There are other types of collectible postage stamps as well including commemorative stamps, revenue stamps and pictorial collectible postage stamps for example.

On the internet you will find some of the best possible places to get your stamps because you will find an endless variety of stamps from all over the world, many of which are offered with the best possible prices.

One of the first places that you may want to try out when it comes to collecting rare stamps online is an online auction site. Not only are there online auction sites that cater to all needs such as eBay, but there are also online auction sites that are specifically tailored to the needs of people learning about collecting rare stamps online. You should be able to browse online looking to see what types of rare stamps you can find that will fit in not only with your taste but also with your budget as well.

You should have no trouble finding a wide variety of different websites online that teach you all about collecting rare stamps online. This is because it has become really popular for people to collect rare stamps. When you are ready to collect rare stamps online, there are a couple of different considerations for you to make:

- * First and foremost, what types of stamps are you interested in collecting? If you like to collect stamps that have animals on them, or that hail from a certain period of time, or that come from a certain country, then collecting rare stamps online that are the complete opposite of what you normally collect is not going to help you in any way, shape or form. Make sure that you are keeping your collection goals in mind, because collecting expensive rare stamps is not the reason why you should be collecting in the first place.

- * Next, you are really going to need to consider your personal budget when it comes to collecting rare stamps online. You are not going to want to spend more money than your budget can allow on stamps because you want to have a rare piece in your collection, if it means not being able to collect the other stamps you want with time. You need to budget for all of the stamp purchases that you plan to make when you are going about collecting rare stamps online.

A great place to get started when it comes to collecting rare stamps online is the rare stamp store, found at http://www.rarestampstore.com. There are plenty of unique rare stamps here for you to consider working into your budget.

Depending on what era the pin is from, you are going to find that the pin backs can tell you a lot about this unique type of Disney memorabilia.

- * Rubber Black Mickey Shape Pin Back – This is the most common pin back that is used by the Disney company for Disney memorabilia.

- * Metal Squeezing Clasp Pin Back – These Disney memorabilia pin backs were used for a number of the pins that were sold prior to the year 2000. They are available in silver color and gold color and they have been used relatively indiscriminately by Disney. Some double posted pins have come with one pin featuring a different colored pin back right out of the package.

- * Shaped Rubber Backs – Over quite a long time, Disney made use of golden colored rubber backs that were round in shape. In the more decent days, these pin backs have come in a wide variety of additional shapes and colors as well. Disney offers Disney memorabilia catalog pins that use a back that is small and shaped like a diamond. Disney actually also markets replacement pin backs that come in a wide variety of different styles and shapes as well. Depending on the park and the time period, there are also brown backs and yellow backs as well.

- * Tie-Tack Backs - These Disney memorabilia pin backs were used for a short period of time around the 1990s. During this period of time Disney experimented using the same clasps that they were using on tie tacks. These pin backs were certainly effective but they also happened to be bulky and heavy.

- * Screw-On Locking Backs - On a few of the Disney memorabilia pins, including the stick pins originating from the 1970s, the Disney company experimented with these screw on backs that were quite effective but also expensive.

- * Standard Pin Clasps - These Disney memorabilia pin backs come on pins that hail from the early part of the 1990s and before then. They are more like the traditional pin back for a brooch, utilizing a clasp that holds the pin in place. They are secure, but they are often too difficult to put on and then take off again.

The main thing that you need to remember when it comes to Disney memorabilia and pin backs is this: Unless the pin happens to be very rare, the pin back you have is not going to be nearly as important. There are a few pin purists that will argue this particular point, but in the grand scheme of things, it is the pin front that matters rather than the pin back.

Memorabilia -> Theater Memorabilia -> Playbills

For fans of Broadway, musicals, specific plays or actors, or entertainment in general, Broadway souvenir programs are a great collectible item. We’ve all been to a play or concert, maybe a production filled with school kids, where programs are handed out at the door. They list the names of the songs to be played or sung, or a little information about the play or musical, and all the names of the musicians, dancers and actors to appear. Broadway souvenir programs, however, are sold as you’re entering a show, rather than handed out for free.

Lots of souvenirs can be found for sale at every Broadway show. T-shirts, maybe even soundtracks for long-running shows, pictures of the cast, calendars, mugs, hats—you name it, it’s there for sale. But especially for people who attend a lot of shows and love the souvenirs, Broadway souvenir programs don’t take up much space, they’re light, and they encapsulate the entire entertainment experience in one small book.

Right at your fingertips you’ll have full color pictures from the production, a cast list with some information about each actor, information about the show itself and more. It’s a great way to remember a great performance for years to come. And if you can catch actors at the stage door, or maybe find your way to an official signing, you can have your Broadway souvenir programs autographed, giving them even more significance to you and value as part of a Broadway collection.

Some people, however, might not be interested in the Broadway show, or it might be a show that’s been closed for years, but they want Broadway souvenir programs from the productions as collector items. Whether they were a fan of the show or just an actor in it, or they’re collecting programs from the Broadway shows available during a certain period of time, the programs must be purchased from dealers or other collectors. Another option is to look for different versions of the same Broadway souvenir programs. Many long-running shows constantly update their programs, making the discovery of older versions a fun challenge for avid collectors.

For most current and recent Broadway souvenir programs, Playbill, the exclusive Broadway magazine, offers many official Broadway programs for sale online. This is a great source for those currently running or recently closed programs you’d like to add to your collection. Online auctions, as usual, are a great place to find vintage Broadway souvenir programs, with or without autographs. For those that are autographed, compare the photo of the signature carefully to one that you know is authentic.

Also, note the seller’s other inventory. Do they look suspicious because they have 40 Boy from Oz Broadway souvenir programs all supposedly signed by Hugh Jackman? Have they sold the same item before, or is the one you’re considering the only one available? What is the likelihood that one person or company has 10 programs signed by Liza Minelli? Use your good judgment when purchasing these items online.

Collectors are generally only able to obtain pieces of furniture from the 1485 to 1600 Tudor Period and onwards, and even the furniture selection from this period is relatively small in comparison.

It was not until the middle of the seventeenth century that things began to change. Before then, most furniture was made simply with oak and with peg joints. Some of these antique furniture items were inlaid or painted, but if there was any décor at all, it was typically carved directly into the wood. The most common antique furniture that you are going to find today includes paneled oak chests intended for linen, and many of these are hand carved in order to feature unique figures and architectural shapes. If the carving is to regular or geometrical, then there is a chance that the piece is either a reproduction, or that the decorations have been improved upon or added much more recently.

The chest of drawers is a piece of antique furniture that has evolved gradually since the latter half of the 17th century. It began with a simple carcass that contained a couple of drawers which were mounted on a stand that featured turned legs. This piece of furniture gradually progressed into what we now know as featuring drawers from top to bottom. This is also the same period of time where using veneer became popular. Thin pieces of carved wood or wood featuring interesting colors were glued onto the piece’s outside frame to serve as decorative paneling or to cover the entire structure.

At this point, chairs and settlings were also beginning to change from their basic, square and relatively plain designs into designs that were significantly more elaborate and featured backs and can backs and seats were being introduced. The very best antique furniture pieces were destined to suit aristocratic homes and they were upholstered lavishly. The backs became significantly higher and the seats became significantly lower.

Another influencing factor on antique furniture was trade with the Far East. Lacquered cabinets featuring two doors and a variety of drawers began to be imported from Japan and China. They were mounted on stands upon reaching England. This was the birth of a process that is known as Japanning, which involves imitating the Oriental style lacquers using spirit and oil varnishes.

Toward the end of the century, the influx of European craftsman brought about a radical change in what types of antique furniture were available. The writing bureau, for example, came to be during this period of time as an arrangement of a cabinet with a drop down, hinged front and an arrangement of cubbies and drawers that provided ample space for writing.

If you are interested in learning how to buy antique furniture, learning the history of the pieces is definitely a good way to go.

Collecting autographed memorabilia, in fact, has become a fad among pretty much everyone because collecting autographed memorabilia is a great way to build worth in something. This is so true, that autographed memorabilia has become a sensible method of investment for many people, but before you make an investment in autographed memorabilia you need to understand what things are actually going to guarantee returns and what purchases are not going to benefit you at all. There is a wide variety of sports memorabilia and other types of autographed memorabilia for you to choose from. In terms of sports memorabilia alone, there is boxing, football, soccer, baseball and any other sport imaginable for you to choose from.

The biggest attraction when it comes to investing in sports autographed memorabilia is that it can appreciate tremendously in price in comparison to other types of investments. No matter what type of autographed memorabilia you have, your autographed memorabilia is likely going to become worth more with time. Not only will autographed memorabilia items have a money back guarantee in place essentially, but these items are also going to grow significantly in price over a period of time.

The biggest catch when it comes to sports autographed memorabilia is knowing how to find authentic pieces of memorabilia since there are fakes out there doing the rounds within the market. These knock off pieces of autographed memorabilia can really mess up your ability to invest if you are not careful about the investments that you make. As a result, it is vitally important that you purchase your autographed memorabilia from reputable and reliable sources as well as recognized outlets. You can insist on receiving an authenticity certificate with your autographed memorabilia in order to make sure that what you are getting is legitimate, as well.

Buying autographed memorabilia has really become a trendy option for investing, and it is something that you can use to teach family members and children about investing as well. If you are just getting started with your own stamp collecting hobby and you are trying to figure out where you need to get started, the following tips should prove to be helpful.

First and foremost, it is said that the first rule of a stamp collecting hobby is to determine what type of stamp you would like to collect. You need to take care of your collection as well, as part of your stamp collecting hobby. When it comes to choosing a type of stamp to collect for your stamp collecting hobby, some of the options that are available are to choose a specific type of location, a specific type of design or a specific period of time. You can just as easily choose a historical period to collect, a specific country, an animal that you fancy or a holiday or special occasion, because there are a multitude of different stamps out there to choose from.

Some people with a stamp collecting hobby like to collect one issue of a certain stamp within a volume, one type of stamp only, or some collect as many different stamps as they can. Once you have decided what variety of stamp collector that you would like to be and what type of stamps you most want to collect, the next step in the process is going to be for you to learn how to care for your stamps properly and completely.

The first thing that you should know is that when handling your stamps you should always be using stamp tongs. While stamp tongs are similar to tweezers, they are not like tweezers because their ends are not pointy. You should never substitute tweezers for actual stamp tongs, otherwise you may end up severely damaging your stamps. Stamp tongs are vital because you should never touch the stamps with your fingers, otherwise the oils in your skin may damage the stamps. When you view stamps, they should always be laid out across a clean sheet of paper in order to minimize the amount of contamination that they experience.

The basic necessary types of tools and supplies that you are going to need for your stamp collecting hobby will require stamp tongs, an envelope for storage, a storage box for the envelopes to be stored in, and anything else you need to get the full enjoyment out of your stamps. As your collection grows, so should your arsenal of stamp collecting hobby tools, including glassine envelopes and nice books for you to store your stamps in. The more that you invest in your stamp collecting hobby, the better the results will be because your stamps will be better cared for and will last a lot longer as a result.

After this, the next period of time that existed was the Classical period for Greek coins, and this period endured until Alexander the Great appeared in 330 BC.

The third period is the Hellenistic period, which drew out until the Romans preoccupied the Greek world in the 1st century BCE. The Greek cities extended in order to create their own coins for additional cities under the rule of Rome. These coins were each completely handmade, and they depicted a wide variety of different scenes, buildings, figureheads and symbols.

All of the Ancient Greek coins were created by hand unlike how modern day coins are made. Ancient Greek coins were eventually invented in a kingdom known as Lydia, which is now known as Turkey, during 620 BCE. When the Ancient Greeks began to create Greek coins from the very start, these coins had a number of different figures, inscriptions and symbols that were specifically designed to exemplify the independence of the poleis.

Even though the Greeks were under the command of Hellenistic kings or autocrats, the Greeks were always generally independent in nature. Their coins were a great way for them to substantiate their independence throughout their history. In other words, Ancient Greek coins are a symbol of independence among a people that struggled with independence for many centuries. Ancient Greek coins are made up of historic pictures and symbols and are now perceived as being artistic, lending to the history of a true art. The examples of the oldest Greek coins are capable of including a lot of sanctified temples and buildings, and this permits individuals to understand how grand those buildings once were in Greek history and lore.

Greek coins, then, were a lot more than a simple system of commerce or a collection of carved or stamped metal. The purpose of Greek coins had so much more to do with independence and religious pride, meaning that they are extremely meaningful as history of art, and the history of a people that struggled for independence and flourished for many years despite being under the rule of others, including Hellenistic kings and the Romans. If you are looking for a type of collection that you can be proud to have in your possession, consider collecting Greek coins so that you can learn the history of a unique people and revel in the signs and symbols of their fight for independence. The more you learn about Greek coins, the better you will be able to benefit from collecting these unique coins.

Remember whether you collect for the investment, or for your own enjoyment. Regardless of which, you should still only buy that which you truly enjoy. While there are definitely trends in the varying collectors markets, it can be difficult to call any of them a sure bet when looking from an investors point of view. While many segments of the memorabilia market has shown growth, there are never any guarantees. By collecting that which you truly enjoy, you build yourself a bit of a defense against lack of market appreciation. If you collect things solely for worth, and they do not appreciate, you are left holding something you cannot even have a personal worth in.

Another general principle to consider when it comes to collecting memorabilia is that you should be attempting to buy the best pieces that are available within your price range. Although it may be tempting for you to consider acquiring as many items as you possibly can in the shortest possible period of time in order to get the ball rolling on your collection, you should be taking your time and trying to buy one really great piece every year rather than trying to buy a number of pieces that are more mediocre in terms of quality.

Quality versus quantity is something that should be your mantra when it comes to collecting memorabilia. In a period of ten years’ time, your collection is going to command a much greater level of respect if you contain just a few really exceptional pieces rather than a larger number of pieces that are merely average in nature.

When it comes to going shopping, one of the most important things that you are going to want to keep in mind is provenance. When you do some due diligence on the material’s source as well as the story that surrounds it, then you will be better able to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud, and there is plenty of fraud out there. There is a magazine known as Forbes Collector Magazine which reported in the year 2004 that as many as 75% to 90% of all autographs that are sold on eBay are fraudulent according to experts. You need to know your source, and you need to choose reputable auction houses and dealers when purchasing memorabilia to collect.

Many of the pieces of memorabilia that are being sold online come with a letter of authenticity, or a certificate of authenticity. Make sure that this is really a legitimate piece of evidence that your autograph is real, by tracing the history of the COA or LOA rather than just accepting it to be fact.

Learning to identify antiques is not difficult, it just takes a little bit of know how and understanding of what qualities make an antique an antique.

Regardless if you are not sure of the age of a piece, want to check the accuracy of an age claim, or wish to be certain the antique has all of its original parts, there are various nuances that should stick out to you. Ask these questions of yourself in order to determine whether or not the item that you are dealing with is in fact an antique.

Question #1 - Is the piece in question made out of materials that are uncommonly or even rarely ever used in modern day production?

Question #2 - Do the details on the piece in question appear to be hand painted, or does it seem as if they were created by a machine?

Question #3 – Does the particular style of the piece in question reflect a certain period of time that may give away hints as to its origin?

Question #4 – For items that are made out of wood, how thick are the pieces of veneer? In general, older veneer is going to be significantly thicker than modern day veneer.

Question #5 – Does the piece that is in question happen to possess nails that are irregularly shaped, or pegs that are squared off? These are characteristics that are reminiscent of times long past.

Question #6 – For items that are used as tables, is the item’s under side lighter in comparison to the top? Antique tables should have lighter undersides.

Question #7 – If there are any carvings or details on the piece, look to see if they are all identical as this will help you determine whether they were done by hand or if they are reminiscent of work from a machine.

Question #8 – When appraising a wooden item, you should check to see if there is darker wood around all of the hardware, indicating that the hardware is original. When the shadows are inconsistent with the current hardware, that should tell you that the current hardware is not the original hardware.

Question #9 – Finally, is there any dirt in the crevices of the piece that has always been hard for you to clean?

You should remember that items that are 100 years old are always going to show their age no matter how well kept they were. Slight wear, even when an item is in top condition, is completely understandable.
