Collectibles -> Barware -> Shot Glasses

For the person who has everything, personalized gifts can be some of the most thoughtful, so why not choose personalized shot glasses? There are many advantages to this type of collectible item, both as a gift, and as something you collect yourself.

Personalized shot glasses are relatively inexpensive compared to some other kinds of gifts. A plain shot glass might make a nice, small gift, but a personalized shot glass suddenly becomes much more significant. The thought that goes into a personalized item will always make it stand out to the recipient, and the personalization that’s added, depending on the message or occasion, can add an even more special touch.

As collectibles and gifts, personalized shot glasses may be small in size, but that’s an advantage. How many times have you received a gift that was meant to be displayed, only to wish it were smaller? Especially for those who love to collect, size and space can be real issues. Mugs are a popular collector item, but take up much more room than shot glasses which are easier to display in smaller spaces. Even a large shot glass collection takes up far less room than almost all other types of collections.

Personalized shot glasses can be purchased with almost any logo, saying, name, initial or type of image engraved or printed on. While these can be purchased in a variety of places, often the best bargains are found in online auctions, especially when you’re ordering bulk purchases.

You might wonder why anyone would ever want to order personalized shot glasses in bulk. In a world overrun by too many things and too much stuff, small and more personalized items are becoming more popular. Plastic shot glasses can be ordered in bulk, for instance, with the names of a bride and groom and handed out at wedding receptions as inexpensive wedding favors. Family reunions, birthday gatherings, almost any kind of convention or party, are possibilities for bulk shot glass purchases.

For individual purchases, auctions can still offer great bargains. Some key things to remember when ordering collectible personalized shot glasses are to read the description and instructions carefully. Some auctions will offer personalized items that have already been engraved or printed. Some people enjoy collecting these items for their novelty value, and may have collections featuring glasses with people’s names on them, wedding or anniversary glasses, initial glasses engraved with only one letter and even personalizations that are practically undecipherable. But if you’re looking to personalize something yourself, you must be sure that’s what the auction offers.

Note if the auction is offering a choice of fonts, or just one standard type of printing. Also, look at the images available if they’re on display. If an image you want looks strange in print, it might not look much better once engraved or printed on the glass. Personalized shot glasses can also be purchased without engraving, but bearing emblems of sports teams, celebrities, countries and any type of item you can imagine.

Collectibles -> Transportation -> Motorcycles-> Harley Davidson

The Harley Davidson motorcycle has become an integral part of Americana and the pop culture of this country. Once the favorite bike of outlaws and renegades, Harley Davidson collectibles have gone mainstream and they are more popular than ever. There are literally hundreds of different Harley Davidson collectibles out there, and sometimes it can be hard to know where the real value is. Here’s an easy guide to finding the best Harley Davidson collectibles.

Motorcycles

By far, the most valuable and sought after Harley Davidson collectible is the motorcycle that bears its name. Whether it’s a chopper, or a regular edition bike, collectors can’t get enough of them and many of these bikes will sell for six figures at auction or at private sales. The older the bike the better, and it’s always nice to find one in good condition. However, some of the fun comes from restoration, so don’t miss a great opportunity if you come across a bike that needs a little repair.

Lighters and Pocket Knives

The next most popular and sometimes valuable Harley Davidson collectible are pocket knives and lighters. For lighters, look for a classic Zippo with the Harley logo, while simple pocket knives that have just the logo are also popular. There are hundreds of different designs and many private collectors will end up with dozens of these in their collections. These can be found at flea markets, garage sales and at online auctions. This is a great entry level collectible.

Die Cast Models

If you can’t get the real thing, a die cast model Harley Davidson collectible is the next best thing. These are intricate, scaled down models of the popular bikes and many of them will be hand painted and have moving parts. If you find one of these models that is still in its original packing, you’ll have found quite a deal. These are popular items at flea markets as well, and many can bring a pretty penny at auction.

Apparel

The next few Harley Davidson collectibles fall under memorabilia, and even though they may not have the same value as a 1969 Hog, they are still sought after by fans of the bike and collectors. One look at the streets of Sturgis can tell you just how many people buy and wear this apparel. Some of the older designs will have value, especially if the apparel is in good condition, but generally, this is more of a novelty item.

General Harley Davidson Collectibles

These cover a wide range of products, from salt shakers, to socks, to temporary tattoos and everything in between. You’d be surprised at just how many Harley Davidson collectibles there are out there and while these may only have emotional value, they are still a lot of fun to collect. Every once in awhile, you can even come across a figurine or a vintage collectible that actually is worth quite a bit of money. Keep your eyes open at garage sales and flea markets – you may just uncover a treasure!

Coins & Paper Money -> Coins: US -> Dollars

An 1896 silver dollar is one of the Morgan dollars that were minted from 1868 to 1904, and then later again in 1921. The image on these coins was designed by George T. Morgan, and while his dollar is a collector favorite today, easily found in online auctions, they were virtually ignored when they were created.

By 1873, the American collar coin was discontinued. Paper money was favored over coins. So when the large, Morgan dollar came onto the scene in 1878, few people were interested in using them. After the Comstock lode was discovered in Nevada, America’s richest silver strike to date, it was necessary to use that silver to keep Nevada’s economy from collapsing. Pressure was put on the government to make a silver dollar, so the US Treasury, despite the veto by President Rutherford B. Hayes, purchased a few million dollars worth of the silver for coinmaking. Some of that silver was used in the 1896 silver dollars, as well as other dollars from that era.

Morgan, a native of England, was brought over to be an engraver for the director of the Philadelphia Mint. Morgan’s design competed with the design by the normal designer and Chief Engraver, William Barger. Morgan’s coin was chosen, with its head of Lady Liberty on the front and a small eagle on the back. Soon after, Morgan became Chief Engraver and remained there for over 40 years, then became Chief Engraver for the United States Mint in his 70s. The 1896 silver dollar as well as all Morgan dollars produced, bear the distinction of being the only American coin Morgan ever designed.

Less than two weeks after Congress authorized the minting, the first Morgan dollars were struck, on March 11, 1878. Philadelphia produced most of the Morgan dollars, but a small mint in Carson City near the silver Comstock lode produced some dollars of that era. Though that mint closed in 1893, after the mine was essentially emptied of silver. The 1896 silver dollars was one of the 500 million Morgan dollars minted between 1878 and 1904. Despite their numbers, the coins weren’t popular with consumers. There were many used coins, in fact, that in 1918, over 270 million were melted to provide Great Britain with silver during the war. Morgan dollars were produced again in 1921, to the tune of 86 million, but stopped the following year so that the Peace dollar, which became popular, could be produced to commemorate the end of World War I.

Millions more Morgan dollars, including the 1896 silver dollar, were melted down for their silver content in the following years. In fact, it wasn’t until 1972, when the General Services Administration auctioned 2.9 million Morgan dollars, the rare ones produced by the Carson City mint that closed in 1893, that the Morgan dollar interested collectors at all. Then LaVere Redfield, a stock investor who had hoarded 400 bags of Morgan dollars, died in 1974 and his 11 tons of Morgan dollars were auctioned for $7.3 million dollars, giving the Morgan dollar real status in the coin world.

Stamps -> Worldwide -> Collections, Lots

Few types of collectors get more excited and enthusiastic about a new acquisition than a stamp collector. Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world, enjoyed by young children, the elderly, and every age in between. Over 20 million people in the United States collect stamps, with some of them enjoying the hobby very casually without much in depth knowledge of the individual stamps and their histories. But some enjoy the study of stamps, also known as philately, and use that detailed knowledge to amass a large and comprehensive collection of stamps from all over the world.

Stamp collecting is so popular that some small countries produce beautiful stamps in limited editions of far more than necessary for their country’s postal needs because collectors buy them and increase their revenue. Stamp collectors interested in collecting, not just for the satisfaction of acquiring certain stamps but as an investment, go in search of rare and valuable stamps.

A young Queen Victoria graced the first postage stamp issued in Britain in 1840. Called the Penny Black, one had to cut it from a sheet of stamps with scissors. Mint and unused Penny Blacks are scarce and valuable, but even a casual collector could find used Penny Blacks in online auctions for affordable prices. Those that are in the worst condition can even be purchased for $20-$40 dollars, and those in the best condition are usually available for less than $200—a very affordable price when you consider you’d be owning the first stamp ever created, with a value that’s only likely to rise.

Most stamps, even very old ones, can be found and collected affordably, making it a great hobby for children and people from any walk of life. While the advent of email and electronic bill paying have greatly reduced the need for stamps, decreased stamp production could put a damper on those who collect modern stamps. But a stamp collector with a collection of older stamps would do well to maintain the collection as the value will likely rise even as stamps become less necessary to our society.

A stamp collector has a variety of choices when choosing which stamps to collect. Some only collect stamps from one country, but aim to acquire one of each type. Others choose only certain types of stamps, like commemorative stamps, stamps in other shapes like circles or triangles, or stamps bearing images of certain things like celebrities or a type of animal. Other collectors choose to collect in general, gathering stamps from all over the world with no real rhyme or reason, just choosing the ones that appeal to them. There’s no wrong way to collect stamps because it’s a very individual hobby.

When purchasing stamps, a stamp collector should ask a few key questions. Is the stamp uncirculated or used, and is it damaged? Also find out if it’s an irregular stamp or one with an error, both of which can sometimes make the stamp more valuable.

Antiques -> Architectural & Garden -> Doors

The look of antique furniture and hardware can lend such old-fashioned charm to a room, so it’s no wonder than an antique door lock is a popular item that can look great in all but the most modern décor. Someone searching for this specific type of antique hardware may be in for a few challenges, but you have choices between the actual antique pieces themselves or very authentic reproduction pieces that probably cost a fraction of the price and are more readily available. Replicas also automatically come in good, working condition without the problems that can be found in some antique locks like rust and wear.

One of the most important things you need to do before you purchase an antique door lock is to know the measurements of your door, and the size of your current doorknob. You’ll need to do a lot of research to find locks that match the style and finish you have in mind. Find some examples online and print the photos for reference, especially if you plan on shopping locally and/or in person rather than online. Cruise collector and antique sites and you’ll probably find people with similar interests, maybe even looking for the same type of lock you are. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find someone who has purchased one and installed it, and can give you advice from experience to make the process easier for you.

It’s important to know the kind of door you have and whether an antique door lock of your choice will even work with your door. Sometimes it’s necessary to replace your door with something that will work. If you don’t want to go that far, then research antique locks a little more and you’ll probably find hardware and fittings that are very close to your original vision that will work with your existing set-up and fit into your budget. The compromise will likely be minimal.

Places like Craigslist for your area and online auctions, specifically eBay, are a great place to look for antiques, especially if you don’t live in an area with a wide variety of antique and vintage shops to choose from. Don’t just search on the term “antique” though, or you’ll be faced with thousands of choices. Try “antique door lock” and then narrow it down from within those results to the specific type you’re looking for. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find it at first. Auctions are dynamic, with new ones going up every day. Keep trying.

Call ahead to antique shops, especially those that are quite a drive, to see if they have what you’re looking for. Know exactly your desired design and finish to make your searching easier, both in person and online. If you can’t find the exact antique door lock you want or it turns out to be more than your budget can bear, replica and reproduction door locks are a popular choice. Many of the reproductions can’t be distinguished from the originals with anything less than a thorough examination.

Bobblehead dolls may be considered silly by some, but there is definitely a national craze to collect them. Whether it is of a famous personality, sports hero, or even a cartoon character, these fun collectibles can be found just about anywhere. While the garden variety bobbleheads are not really all that valuable, there are a few out there that will actually be worth quite a bit of money. Here’s a quick guide to help you find the diamonds in the rough.

1. Mickey Mantle Bobbleheads

These are perhaps the most sought after bobbleheads, and they are incredibly valuable. Look for the ones that were produced during 1961, when Mantle was going up against Marris. These were once sold for a mere dollar, but now can bring ten times that amount at auction, or even more. It’s rare to find one that is still in good condition, but flea markets and online auctions are a great place to start. Look for Mickey Mantle bobbleheads that don’t have any cracks in the finish and that are still generally in great condition. These will be the most valuable.

2. Secretariat Bobblehead

Although you wouldn’t think of a horse as being the prime candidate for immortalization as a bobblehead, the Secretariat dolls are incredibly collectible. These were produced during the horse’s quest for the Triple Crown, and since he holds such a high place in horse history and in the hearts of race fans everywhere, these dolls are actually highly sought after. Look for one that still has all the original paint and bright colors and you may just find one that is worth more than $850.

3. Cal Ripken Jr Bobblehead

Not all Cal Ripken Jr bobbleheads are worth money, so you’re going to want to keep your eyes open for the ones that were produced in 2001, when he was awarded game MVP. This doll will have an All Stars label as well as the number of the collectible. Only 2001 of these bobbleheads were produced, so finding one for sale won’t be easy. Once again, look for these at online auction sites, flea markets or even yard sales. You never know, you may just stumble on one of these highly collectible bobbleheads.

4. Disney Sports Bobbleheads

If you can find older Disney sports bobbleheads, they are usually worth a pretty penny, especially to someone that collects Disney memorabilia. These are easy enough to find if you hang around flea markets or go garage sale shopping. Most may not know just how valuable these dolls are, especially if they happen to have one of the prototype models from specific companies.

5. Commemorative Bobbleheads

A good rule of thumb to follow is that if a bobblehead is commemorating a specific event, such as a World Series win, or something in sports history, chances are it’s going to be pretty valuable. Always look for the ones that are part of a limited edition since they will definitely be worth the most amount of money and can sell for thousands at auction.

Sports Memorabilia -> Autographs – Original -> Autographs – Reprints

When it comes to high value sports related collectibles, sports autographs are among the best. Whether it’s an autographed baseball bat, basketball jersey or a football helmet, autographed merchandise can be worth its weight in gold. If you are interested in getting some sports autographs, but you don’t know where to look, here’s a quick guide to help you build up your collection.

1. Right from the source

One of the easiest ways to get sports autographs is simply to go to games and ask the players for them directly. Most will more than willing to offer autographs, but it is best to wait until after the game is over before you approach them. The majority of arenas will have an area set up where the fans can interact with the players. It will be up to the individual players as to whether or not they will actually sign something, but most will. This is the most economical way to get a sports autograph, since you will only need to purchase the item that you want to have signed. As a plus, these autographs are often personalized, making them even more special to the collector.

2. From licensed vendors

You can get authentic sports autographs from licensed vendors that have worked out an agreement either with a certain league or with an individual player. These stores will typically have a wide variety of merchandise available and it is fairly easy to get a hold of a popular player’s autograph this way. The major downside for many consumers is that these stores do charge premium prices for the merchandise they sell.

3. From other private collectors

If you are looking for vintage or rare sports autographs, this is a great way to find them. Private collectors will sometimes have a disbursement sale, or you can attend auctions and pick up some great deals. Once again, the prices will probably be a little high, but you will have access to a wide variety of different types of autographed merchandise.

4. At online auctions

This has become one of the most popular ways to get sports autographs. You can find literally thousands of different autographs online and many sellers have built up a great reputation for providing authentic merchandise. However, it is smart to be cautious when buying sports memorabilia online since there are some sellers that do take advantage of people. Ask for certificates of authenticity, or have the item appraised before you buy to ensure that you are getting authentic autographs.

These are just a few ways that the average collector can get their hands on sports autographs. Wherever you shop, just take the time to do your homework to make sure that you are getting a real piece of sports memorabilia. By following this step, you can be assured that your autograph will have more than just sentimental value.

Collecting sports autographs is a great hobby for kids and can help them get involved in sports. In addition, it serves as a great way to spend more quality time with your kids.

Antiques -> Furniture -> Tables, Stands

If you’re looking for antique furniture like an antique school table or desk, one great place to find these items is estate auctions. While you can find antique furniture in online auctions like eBay, you need to be very savvy about the purchases you make–just because something looks antique doesn’t mean it is. There are entire stores where you can purchase antique reproductions, after all, and own something brand new that looks like it was crafted 100 years ago. So those auctions that claim to be for antique furniture and antique school desks should be able to offer more than just the claim of “antique” to prove that the item really is an authentic antique.

Your reasons for wanting to find an antique school table have much to do with how you should go about purchasing one. If it’s merely the look you’re after, a certain style or type of manufacture, then you might decide to buy a reproduction. Reproduction antiques are less expensive and have an appearance very similar to the originals they’re modeled after. If it’s a sentimental quest because you remember how something looked or felt, or because maybe a grandparent or older relative had one that has become lost and you’d like to have that same piece, consider purchasing a reproduction.

But if you’re set on a real antique school table, then you’re going to need to do some homework. You can probably walk into most antique stores today and find something to suit you, but if you’d rather pay less than the antique store price and enjoy the hunt for a piece that speaks to you personally rather than just purchasing what happens to be available in the store, then you need to shop around for some time before purchasing so that you can do a price check.

Visit many antique stores to get a feel of the average cost of an antique school table. While some stores might not have one, you’re sure to find at least a few. And even if they’re not exactly the item you’re looking for they should be similar in price to the one you’re hoping to find. This will help you know how much cost you’ll probably look at when you find the piece you want.

It will also help you become more familiar with the look of an authentic antique school table. Sometimes during estate auctions or even in online auctions, you’ll see piece for sale that looks antique but you’re not sure, and it seems the seller really doesn’t know that much background about the piece. That doesn’t necessarily mean the seller or auctioneer is trying to cheat you by passing off something too new as an antique. Often, the history of antique pieces, especially antique furniture, becomes muddied through the years.

Become familiar with the look, and you might spot an antique school table when no one else recognizes the treasure. Beware of refinished furniture unless the purchase is purely sentimental. Refinishing often completely destroys the antique value of the item.

Coins & Paper Money -> Gold -> American Eagle

Gold Eagle coins are American currency, first released in 1986, that contains the stated amount of actual gold weight claimed in troy ounces, with a silver and copper alloy added to make the coins less soft and more wear resistant. The coins are an official US gold bullion coin, authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1986.

The first Gold Eagle coins minted from 1986 to 1991 are dated with Roman numerals. Gold Eagle coins from 1992 onward switched to Arabic numbering. These coins are worth far more than their face value, because of their gold content. In the beginning of 2008, a $5 American Golden Eagle was actually worth about $110, with this amount varying daily, of course, based on the price of gold. The US Mint makes a proof suitable for collectors, most which carry the mint mark of “W” (which stands for the West Point mint in New York) beneath the date.

The design on Gold Eagle coins is often referred to as one of the most beautiful to grace an American coin. It features Lady Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch, her hair flowing, with the Capitol building in the background. The reverse of the coin boats an eagle above his nest of hatchlings, with the mother eagle watching over her brood. The male eagle carries an olive branch, long known as the symbol for peace. The coins come in four sizes: one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and one-tenth ounce. The American Golden Eagle has become the most widely traded gold bullion coin in the world.

Gold Eagle coins are certainly valuable to coin collectors, and investors, thanks to their gold content. For collectors interested solely in the design, Golden Eagle proofs are a great addition to your collection. They’re designed specifically for coin collectors, and don’t carry the high price of the real gold bullion coins. These are widely available in places like flea markets, online stores and online auctions and their value is based on their condition. They should be graded like ordinary coins, from poor to uncirculated, and judged on that basis.

True Gold Eagle coins, though, are an actual investment whose gold content and purity are actually guaranteed by the US Government. American Eagles are actually even valid deposits for Individual Retirement Accounts, otherwise known as IRAs. Every major government holds gold in reserve because it’s a tangible asset. What you hold in your hand is what’s valuable, unlike paper money and coins, whose value is representative of assets like gold that are held in the treasury.

Gold Eagle coins are an easy and affordable way to invest in gold. Where big investors might trade for gold in thousands of dollars or more at a time, the average investor or beginning investor can choose to purchase American Eagle coins instead. The value may vary daily with the price of gold, but the rarity of real gold virtually ensures that the value won’t drop dramatically as other investments can.

Building up a stamp collection is a hobby for thousands of people and it is one of the oldest forms of collectibles. For those that are just getting started with their stamp collection, there are a few things to remember to make sure that it goes smoothly.

1. Start with a target

It often helps to have a target in mind when you begin building up your stamp collection. For example, you can set out to collect nothing but French stamps, or you can try to find British stamps that were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria. By picking a narrow target, you can start to see results in less time and you’ll be more motivated to keep working on your stamp collection. This is also a great way to build up a very valuable collection, especially if you are targeting only rare stamps.

2. Buy a proper stamp collection book

In order to keep track of your stamp collection, it is vital to have a book. This will allow you to find stamps that you may be missing, and you will also have a safe place to store your stamps where they won’t be exposed to air and dust. This will help them hold their value longer. It is also neat to see your book being filled up as you increase your stamp collection and this can be a great motivator to keep looking for more stamps.

3. Always be on the lookout for new stamps

You never know when you may come across a rare stamp and it’s a good idea to keep updated on any auctions in your area that may contain these collectibles. Estate sales are another great place to shop and sometimes, you may be able to purchase a stamp collection that has already been put together for you. Other great places to find stamps include second hand stores, antique stores and at online auctions.

4. Stay informed and learn about stamps

In order to be able to build a good stamp collection, you need to have a good idea of the different values of stamps, as well as which ones you may be more interested in. Buy a few books about collecting stamps and subscribe to newsletters and magazines that are devoted to this hobby. You can learn a lot just by reading them and you’ll be able to keep in the loop on new stamp editions, as well as upcoming auctions for rare stamps.

5. Getting children interested in stamp collections

Local post offices sometimes hold stamp drives or encourage people to place used stamps in a box so that children can start their own collections. This is a great hobby for kids, and with a little help, they can start building their own stamp collection while they are still young. Try to find something that they are interested in, and use this as a springboard to help you find stamps that they may enjoy based on these interests.
