Learning how to buy sports memorabilia and collect sports memorabilia is something that can be both profitable and enjoyable at the same time. Here are some tips, some definitions and some examples that are going to help you to better understand the entire process for learning how to buy sports memorabilia and enjoy sports memorabilia in a collection.

What are officially licensed products?

These are products that have come to be because a professional athletic association has granted permission to a company to display a team logo, name or trademark on a product. An item that is officially licensed will typically have a tag or a sticker that indicates that the item has been officially licensed by a professional athletic association such as the NHL, NASCAR, NFL, NCAA, MLB or NBA for example.

What are limited editions?

When you buy sports memorabilia that is noted as being a limited edition collectible, what this means is that there are only a certain number of that item that were produced or that were autographed. There are typically going to be two different numbers that are displayed on such a collectible, one which is high and one which is low. The high number is indicating the total number of limited edition items that were produced and the lower number is indicating what number yours is out of the total.

With limited editions, the only way that the number is going to be the same in both numbers is if you have received the last limited edition item out of the total number of items that was produced. Most of these limited edition items are going to come with what is known as a certificate of authenticity, which is important even if the item is not actually autographed because what it is doing is letting you know that the item is licensed, limited edition and authentic, and this is something that you should be looking for when you buy sports memorabilia.

When you have the certified signature from a professional athlete on your collectible sports memorabilia, then what you have is a limited edition autographed piece of sports memorabilia. These signatures can appear on baseball cards, pictures, jerseys, balls and any other piece of memorabilia or equipment. The signature absolutely must be certified in order for the memorabilia to be worth anything, so when you buy sports memorabilia, make sure that you are getting the piece verified before you purchase it in order to verify its authenticity.

There are a lot of things that go into how rare or how limited edition an item is including the popularity or talent of the particular athlete, the number of items available to the public, if there is a hologram on the item and the condition of the item, though there are many other criteria as well.

Few types of collectors get more excited and enthusiastic about a new acquisition than a stamp collector. Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world, enjoyed by young children, the elderly, and every age in between. Over 20 million people in the United States collect stamps, with some of them enjoying the hobby very casually without much in depth knowledge of the individual stamps and their histories. Stamp collecting is so popular that some small countries produce beautiful stamps in limited editions of far more than necessary for their country’s postal needs because collectors buy them and increase their revenue. Stamp collectors interested in collecting, not just for the satisfaction of acquiring certain stamps but as an investment, go in search of rare and valuable stamps.

A young Queen Victoria graced the first postage stamp issued in Britain in 1840. Called the Penny Black, one had to cut it from a sheet of stamps with scissors. Mint and unused Penny Blacks are scarce and valuable, but even a casual collector could find used Penny Blacks in online auctions for affordable prices. Those that are in the worst condition can even be purchased for $20-$40 dollars, and those in the best condition are usually available for less than $200—a very affordable price when you consider you’d be owning the first stamp ever created, with a value that’s only likely to rise.

Most stamps, even very old ones, can be found and collected affordably, making it a great hobby for children and people from any walk of life. While the advent of email and electronic bill paying have greatly reduced the need for stamps, decreased stamp production could put a damper on those who collect modern stamps. But a stamp collector with a collection of older stamps would do well to maintain the collection as the value will likely rise even as stamps become less necessary to our society.

A stamp collector has a variety of choices when choosing which stamps to collect. Some only collect stamps from one country, but aim to acquire one of each type. Others choose only certain types of stamps, like commemorative stamps, stamps in other shapes like circles or triangles, or stamps bearing images of certain things like celebrities or a type of animal. Other collectors choose to collect in general, gathering stamps from all over the world with no real rhyme or reason, just choosing the ones that appeal to them. There’s no wrong way to collect stamps because it’s a very individual hobby.

When purchasing stamps, a stamp collector should ask a few key questions. Is the stamp uncirculated or used, and is it damaged? Also find out if it’s an irregular stamp or one with an error, both of which can sometimes make the stamp more valuable.

One of the most common types of memorabilia for the entertainment world are collector plates. These decorative items adorn the homes of many, but they may not be aware of just how valuable these small collectibles are. While there are plenty of collector plates that have only sentimental value, you can find some that are actually worth quite a lot of money.

1. Gone With the Wind

This much loved movie produced numerous memorabilia items and collector plates are very valuable. Look for plates that were produced back when the film was released. 4. Disney Collector Plates

Once again, the older the collector plate, the more valuable it will be. This is certainly true of Disney plates and you can actually find many incredible deals, if you pay attention. Look for plates that were produced during the 1930’s to the 1950’s for the most valuable items. Today’s plates however may be worth something in the future, so it is best to take good care of them now.

If you are interested in getting into collector plates, there are some great resources to find them. The first place to look is at a local flea market, or even a garage sale. You’ll be surprised at just how many top dollar collector plates are actually discovered this way. Your next option is to visit an antique dealer, as they frequently carry these popular items.

You can also find great collector plates at online auction sites and the variety is usually quite large. However, you’ll need to make sure that the plate comes with a certificate of authenticity, especially since you won’t be able to examine the plate in person, before you make your purchase. This will help to ensure that you are getting an actual collector’s item.

One of the types of Walt Disney Collectibles that is available to you is Walt Disney Classics Collection or WDCC, which was originally introduced in the year 1992 at a collectibles show known as South Bend Collectible Show. Three years of work went into the creation of this collection of Disney figurines that involved the input of numerous Disney sculptors and animation artists. The Walt Disney Collectibles were designed to closely resemble all of the animated counterparts that they were based on. Now to date there are more than 100 different Walt Disney Collectibles in the Walt Disney Classics Collection. They have been produced for over a decade and many have become retired in this period of time. The retirements have become common, creating what is essentially a secondary market for collectors that are seeking out these rare Walt Disney Collectibles. With each and every single retirement, the molds are really and truly broken, and what this does is ensures that additional characters will never be created again using these same molds. Some Walt Disney Collectibles are also issued with numbers as limited editions. It should be noted that the Disney company avoids starting off their numbers with the number one. All of these Walt Disney Collectibles carry a specific back stamp that indicates what year the figurine was produced in. Each of these Walt Disney Collectibles is also going to be issued with a COA or Certificate of Authenticity.

Only a year after the Walt Disney Collectibles debuted, Disney introduced a club for collectors that was designed to be an adjunct to the collection. Members of the Walt Disney Collectors Society pay $50 per year to join and they get a free figurine from the club every year as well as access to numerous additional members only Walt Disney Collectibles, a newsletter, a magazine subscription and an annual catalog of the Walt Disney Collectibles offered by the collection. In 1993, the special membership sculpture was a Jiminy Cricket from the Pinocchio movie. The Walt Disney Collectibles market is managed by Enesco, a licensee by Disney. Some of the more original staff members within Disney still work on maintaining the Walt Disney Collectibles club.
