The popular US coin called the Buffalo Nickel was only minted from 1913 to 1938, but it quickly became one of the most popular coins and certainly one of the most collectible. The Buffalo Nickel used to be very easy to find throughout the 1960’s, but after that point, availability dropped off sharply. This meant that these coins became very sought after and to this day finding a Buffalo Nickel is certainly cause for celebration.

The actual design on the coin is not really a buffalo, but rather a depiction of the American Bison. The front of a Buffalo Nickel features the face of a Native American. The designer, James Earle Fraser, used three historic Native American chiefs as a composite for this design, and the buffalo was placed on the back. It was his intention to create a coin that would be similar in style to the coins produced during ancient times and little did he know that his creation would become this popular.

Early copies of the Buffalo Nickel carry the words Five Cents on the back, and these are very rare indeed. Production on this particular design was halted once it was observed that the raised lettering would wear off quickly. For collectors, it is truly remarkable to come across one of the coins that was minted during this period, particularly if the words are still intact. Once the new design was released, the lettering was lowered, but oddly enough, the raised lettering on the date was not.

This led to yet another similar problem, but this was never actually fixed. Most Buffalo Nickels no longer have their date intact due to this problem, so it can be complicated to determine when exactly the coin was minted. However, many collectors feel that this backstory adds to the overall charm of the coin.

There was one error in the design that only appears on the coins that were minted during 1937. For some reason, the buffalo design was changed slightly and on these coins, it appears as though it only has three legs. When you add this to the fact that the coin would stop being circulated in less than a year, the 1937 edition is probably the most sought after edition.

Even though these coins were mass produced between the period of 1913 to 1938, finding one today is very rare. It is estimated that approximately 1 in every 25,000 nickels is a Buffalo Nickel, but many collectors would lower that further. This means that there is a big demand for those that collect this type of coin and you can typically find them only at auction or if a private collector decides to sell their collection.

The Buffalo Nickel was the inspiration for another coin that was recently released. The American Buffalo is a gold coin that takes many of its design cues from Fraser’s original. Although this may have more face value, to the collector of Buffalo Nickels, there is no replacement for the original.

Grateful Dead fans, often called Dead Heads, and music memorabilia collectors can pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for items like handbills and Grateful Dead posters. Anyone not familiar with the band or the unique style of images and posters used during the band’s run might be surprised at the value of some of the items, but it comes as little surprise to collectors. While not everyone might enjoy Grateful Dead music or memorabilia, almost everyone has heard of them. And fans are particularly loyal, even though the Grateful Dead was never a popular “mainstream” band and never quite achieved the fame of many of the same bands around during its heyday.

The Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist Jerry Garcia became a well-known name in music because of his talents and his outspokenness. The group formed in San Francisco in 1964 with their original name, The Warlocks, and continued on until Garcia’s death in 1995. Grateful dead posters from their early period, particularly concert posters from the 60s and 70s, are the most rare and valuable posters available from the band.

They drew their following because of their unique type of music, which combined several different styles, and their psychedelic leanings. Drug use in the 60s among those who went to see San Francisco bands was the rule, not the exception, and because some of the bands openly used drugs, it became a sort of culture among bands and fans, and a symbol for the counterculture of the time. The Grateful Dead embraced that psychedelic stoned attitude, and became popular among those who felt the same.

Grateful Dead posters are a visual delight for fans of the 60s counterculture and all things psychedelic. Often the concert posters are dominated by the large vintage lettering, and others often feature skeletons symbolizing, “The Dead,” as the band was often called by its fans. Some of the more valuable posters feature skeletons and roses, and one features a multi-colored skull wearing a top hat—a poster that can bring from $250 to $500 at an auction.

The band came out of the same area, and was part of the collective group of bands that became popular called the San Francisco Sound, with groups like the then Jefferson Airplane (later known as Jefferson Starship, and then just Starship) and Santana. One of their most widely known songs is probably “Touch of Gray.” Fans delighted in the way the band would play for the sheer love of it “jamming” like few other bands at the time did. Grateful Dead posters from those early concerts are harder to find because the focus was so much more on the music than memorabilia at the time, not many people worried about getting them or saving them.

If you want to find vintage Grateful Dead posters online, then auctions like eBay are an excellent source. Even posters with tiny tears around the edges and minor damage can be valuable, so don’t overlook those as collector pieces.

One of the unique differences among different collectibles when you are putting together a pez collection is the anatomy of the dispensers, as the different parts of the dispensers have changed over time. Here are some of the parts of a pez collection:

Head -

The head of the Pez dispenser is the character on the top of the dispenser. Sometimes the dispenser head is an object such as a truck, a cap or a whistle, or a character, such as a witch, Batman or a pumpkin, or perhaps even an animal, such as a dinosaur, a monkey or a giraffe. There is no end to what types of items can be positioned at the head of a Pez dispenser.

Stem –

The steam of a Pez dispenser is the body of the dispenser, or the main portion where the candy is stored. The stem is rectangular in its shape, and PEZ is written down both sides. One side features the lettering spelled from the top to the bottom, and the other side displays the lettering sideways from the bottom to the top. The stem of the Pez dispenser is also where you will find a patent number, the country of origin for the dispenser, and the IMC, which is an injection mold code.

Feet -

The Pez dispenser also has a base, which is known as the feet. They are a flat piece molded out of plastic, resembling shoes. The purpose of these feet is to make the Pez dispenser more stable when it is standing upright. The original Pez dispensers did not have any feet, they simply had squared off bottoms. These Pez dispensers are known as NF or Non-Footed dispensers. Some people affix little Pez shoes, allowing the dispensers to stand upright even if they do not have their own feet. There are two types of feet, thin profile feet and thicker profile feet. The thicker feet were not implemented until 1990.

Candy Pusher -

The candy pusher is essentially a finger that is on the back of the head, allowing you to push the candy forward when the head is tilted backward. There is also a flat, small surface on the pusher’s inner side, sitting against a head spring. This presses against the flat surface, allowing the head to remain spring loaded while it is in a closed position, meaning that the head never flops around, not even when the dispenser is upside down.

Inner Sleeve and Candy Button -

The inner sleeve is the candy tray, holding the Pez candy in piece. The candy button is a piece sitting inside the sleeve that pushes the candy upward so that the next piece is ready to be dispensed. These parts of the Pez dispenser are designed to keep the candy coming.

There are a wide variety of different types of coins, however, and not all coins are currently being accepted as being currency that is capable of being spent as a payment for transactions on a day to day basis. One of the things that you can consider when it comes to coin collecting is coin parts and anatomy, and how different coins are made from different materials and made in different ways accordingly.

So what are the main coin parts, and that is the purpose of each part of the coin?

Sides

The coin has two different sides, the head side and the tail side. Technically, the sides of the coin are known as the obverse side and the reverse side of the coin. In general, the bust image or portrait on the coin and the year of the mintage are both engraved on the coin’s obverse side. The face value for the coin is what is pressed on the other side of the coin, the reverse side.

Rim

The rim of the coin is the raised area that runs all the way along the edge of the coin. The rim of the coin can be found both on the obverse side of the coin and the reverse side of the coin as well.

Legend

The legend on the coin is what you call the inscription or any lettering that you find on the coin such as the country where the coin was issued and the face value for the coin.

Field and Relief

The field on the coin is the coin’s flat portion. The relief on the coin is the coin’s raised portion, or any design elements on the coin that are made during the process of stroking. Some examples of the relief portions of the coin include the legend of the coin, the portrait of the coin and the rim of the coin.

Edge

Contrary to the coin’s rim, which runs along the edge of the entire coin, the edge itself is the true actual edge on the coin. The edge could possibly have a number of different decorative types. For example, the edge may be plain, it could be reeded, ornamented or it could be grooved.

Portrait and Date

Finally, the portrait is the image on the obverse side of the coin, which is typically a bust of a person who is significant such as a president or another ruler. The date of the coin also appears on the obverse side of the coin, and it is responsible for indicating when the coin was actually minted.
