Money -> Paper Money: World -> Canada

Canadian paper money has an interesting history. If many of us were handed an example of the first Canadian paper currency, we wouldn’t recognize its significance. That’s because the first bills issued in Canada weren’t printed bills at all because paper was an expensive and somewhat scarce commodity. In 1685, Jacques de Meulles, the intendant of the French colony in North America, needed money to pay troops. He gathered playing cards, signed them, put his seal on them, and distributed them. He made this card money legal tender and required merchants to accept them. The rarity of these cards today make them highly valuable, so they’re generally only found in museums.

Canadian paper money issued in the 1800s is unique in that different bills were issued by different provinces. The Island of Saint John (later known as Prince Edward Island), Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Canada and Alberta issued separate bills. All of these monies are rarely available to collectors, including British Army Bills that were issued between 1813 and 1818 as a an emergency because of The War of 1812. They’re all highly valuable and extremely rare, though occasionally Newfoundland bills and some Alberta bills from 1936 become available. Municipal notes, like those issued beginning in 1821 in Saint John, New Brunswick, are also very rare and hard to find.

Bank notes are the most readily available collectible Canadian paper money, though certain specimens are still very difficult to find. But bank issues are the best place for beginning collectors to start, and the best way to enhance an existing collection. Proof and specimen notes do show up in auctions occasionally, but they’re very rare and command high prices. Notes with the lowest serial numbers were usually kept as souvenirs by banking insiders, making them rare and valuable today.

Notes issued during 1837 and 1838 were often distributed by merchants who were sympathetic to the Patriots, because there was a limited amount of coins in circulation. These are great for Canadian paper money collectors, especially those interested in Canada’s history. They’re readily found in online auctions in varying conditions, and while some specific examples might be rare, even these usually spring up and become available at less cost than other rare types of notes.

While they never had monetary value and weren’t technically Canadian paper money, notes issued by business colleges in the late 19th century and early 20th century were used during training. And merchant advertising notes that also had no value, but are also an interesting part of Canadian history, are highly collectible today.

Old Canadian paper money can rarely be found in anything better than fine condition, with most of the older and more scarce bills usually in much worse shape. When looking at money to purchase, certainly the condition is important, but since so much of the older currency is in less than fine condition, a collector shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase even a worn but older and possibly hard to find bill.

Coins & Paper Money -> Coins: World -> Europe

Euro coins were first put into circulation in 2002 by the European Union. There are 8 coins: 1, 2 5, 10 and 20 cent coins, as well a the 100 and 200 cent coins, which equal 1 and 2 Euros, respectively. Because these aren’t just coins used as legal tender within one country but rather all of Europe, they have a common side that shows a map of Europe, and the other side of each Euro bears a design that represents the country of its origin.

Though Euro coins weren’t circulated until 2002, some were minted as early as 1999. Earlier versions of the 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces bore a map of Europe that made it appear all the countries were islands, as the borders between them were shown as actual breaks in the landmass. The 1 and 2 Euro coins showed Europe as a cohesive nation while still depicting borders between the countries. Each nation chooses its own reverse design, while the common side with its stars, bars and map of Europe remains the same throughout.

Euros coins are interesting for collectors because of this diversity. Some countries choose their national side to be the same on each coin like Belgium has, or each coin can bear a different design, like Italy’s. Belgian Euros actually draw a great deal on the nation’s previous coin designs while some countries like France use monuments and symbols with very stylized designs on their coins.

Additionally, there are certain rules the national designs must follow. The design must contain 12 stars, the year of issue and the engraver’s initials. The national side also can’t show the denomination of the coin because that’s on the common side, nor can it repeat the word Euro unless it’s written in another alphabet, like it is on the Greek coins.

The national side on Euro coins is also locked in until the end of 2008, with no changes allowed unless a monarch depicted on the coins dies or abdicates the throne. The Vatican coins were allows to change their national side when Pope John Paul II died in 1995. They issued a different coin while the throne was empty, then in 2006 they issued coins featuring the effigy of the new Pope, Pop Benedict XVI.

Commemorative coins are released regularly. In 2007 all countries that produce the Euro created a Treaty of Rome commemorative coin that was almost identical to that of every other country. Euro coins have also been designed to make it easy for blind or sight-impaired individuals to be able to distinguish between the coins. Each has a unique edge design that can be felt to identify the amount of currency, and the sizes go up with the value of the coin.

For coin collectors, Euro coins can be a fascinating part of their hobby with so many different coins featuring so many different designs. Online auctions like eBay are a popular place to acquire the coins, which are graded similarly to any collectible coins.

There are a few different kinds of coins which you will find in most every collection. Rare coins are among the most prized of all coins you will find in a collection. Of course, these are not the only coins which you will find in a collection. You will also find that most collections will have at least one commemorative coin. This begs the question as to why these kinds of coins would be so collectible. The more you find out about commemorative coins, the more it will make sense to own the coins in your own collection.

For most people, the answer to why the commemorative coin is collectible is because it is instantly valuable. The coins value of each coin will depend on a few different factors. It will depend on the amount of coins which are produced. The beauty of the coins and the story behind the coins also plays a large part in how valuable the coins will be to you and other numismatics. Keep these things in mind when you are going to buy your next commemorative issue coin from the mint or from another collector.

Volume of Striking

In most cases a commemorative coin is struck with only a limited number being put into production. This means that the coins are instantly rare. The less the coins which are created, the less you will find that you or anyone else can obtain. If the coin is intended for distribution as legal tender as the state quarters are, only the ones which are graded in Mint Status (MS60 – MS69) are considered to be worth anything other than a quarter. This is because anything which has been held by human hands has nothing unique about it. It is common.

Beauty of the Coin

The beauty of the commemorative coin is very important in terms of its value. This is because all else, people like to look at the coins. The more striking the coin is, the more it will be worth to the numismatic crowd. Coins like the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle are prized not only because they are rare. They are prized because they are considered by most to be one of the most beautiful coins ever to be struck by the Mint.

The Story Behind the Coin

Often if the commemorative coin has a good story attached to it, it will increase the value of the coin. This can be the reason why the coin was created in the first place. It can also be because the coin went through a lot of turmoil to get to the point in history where it currently resides. The more interesting the story, the more the coin is worth. Often the story behind the coin will be what has led to the rarity of the coin or the beauty of the coin. This is why many of the commemorative coins which are sold are either graded and slabbed or they are sealed in a frame which tells the story of the coin.

For as many people out there who enjoy collecting coins, there are a lot of people who enjoy collecting exonumia as well. These items are all of the things which are collected which are related to, but different from the coins and paper money which are collected by numismatics. There are a lot of different things which can fall under this classification. It is good to know about the classification whether you decide to collect the items or not. This is because you will know how they can relate to what you choose to collect.

There are a few things you should be aware of in relation to exonumia. By being aware of these things, you can make a decision to start collecting the forms in general or at least to collect one or two items which fall under the classification. It is good to know what forms these items can take. It is also good to know why they are valuable to people. It is also a good idea to know what you must do in order to preserve the items so that they will retain value and even appreciate in value.

Learning the Forms

The first thing you will need to know about exonumia is what kinds of forms the items can take. This includes such things as tokens and medals. It also includes cheques, credit cards and other forms of non-legal tender or items which have value outside of the numismatic items. Tokens are those which are used as something which is good for something else. These can represent specific monetary value even if they have no actual value in terms of legal tender. Medals have much the same value similarities as the tokens.

Why These are Valuable

The value of anything is up to those who collect them. When it comes to exonumia, the value of something is normally represented by the ways in which it was used or the history of the piece. Tokens which were used for a ride at a certain World Fair will have value because of the fact that the World Fair does not exist anymore and most people did not hold on to these tokens. Other things like elongated coins are valuable because they represent a place or a time in history.

Preserving Your Collection

When it comes to any collection, it is all about making sure that you can preserve the item. Most of what falls under the classification of exonumia can be preserved much in the same way that you would preserve a coin collection. You will make sure that you hold the tokens, medals and coins in slabs or in plastic bags, plaques and more. The idea is to make sure that they will remain in their current state for as long as possible.
