The Russian ruble collector is likely someone who doesn’t just love coins, but has an interest in Russia’s heritage as a country. One of the problems with purchasing rubles is that counterfeiting has always been a common thing with Russian coins. And not just to produce fake money to use, but rather to simply copy a design for novelty. If you find one of these “authentic forgeries” you’ll probably pay quite a high price, as they’re valuable today. But other counterfeits, like circulated coins, are worth nothing.

The Russian ruble is also represented with paper currency, which saw less counterfeiting than the coins. It wasn’t uncommon for the early rubles of the 15th century to be counterfeited by the people, as they were merely oddly shaped bars of silver and easily reproduced. When coins were minted with designs, forgery became more difficult for common people. But the wealthy often ordered coins reproduced for them to keep as collector items.

One way to spot these collector forgeries in a Russian ruble is to look at the edge. Often there will be markings on the edge that you won’t find on an authentic Russian coin. Because these forgeries weren’t created for the purpose of purchasing goods, but instead to be kept as collector items, they’re usually in excellent condition and are very valuable, though they have no worth as currency.

Another way to detect a forged Russian ruble is to learn a little about the history of Russia and her coinage. With a little bit of reading and research, you can spot which rubles are the most rare and unlikely to be found in large lots where people buy coins, either from collectors or in places like eBay online.

The rarest Russian ruble, for instance, is one that coin collectors might want to own, even though it’s virtually impossible. The silver Constantine is the rarest. Only a few are known to be in existence, and the last genuine Constantine was sold for the largest price ever earned by a single coin in auction.

The value of this coin springs from the fact that the Russian ruble was minted when it was believed that Constantine would take over power after Alexander’s death. But Constantine abdicated the throne, after some coins were already created. For collectors who like the history behind this particular coin and would like it represented in their collection, a reproduction can be found for an affordable price, just to have as a novelty.

A ruble can be a great piece for a coin collector or even someone who collects things representing Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s diverse history. Whether paper rubles or coins, the designs on both show some of the best Russian engraving art created. The ruble isn’t much of an investment for its currency value, as the value is low compared to other world currencies. But as a piece for a coin collector or someone interested in Russia’s history, a Russian ruble can be a valuable part of a collection.

Rare coins are a special part of coin collecting, providing individuals with goals to set and coins to chase.

There are some coins that are more rare than others, making them more elusive and more interesting. Having information on these coins will help you to understand their history and to understand exactly what is so unique about the coins. These are just some of the rare coins that you may want to add to your collection.

1943 Copper Penny

Wars tend to bring out interesting pieces of money for collectors, and the 1943 copper penny is no exception. The penny was created during the Second World War – a time when copper was rationed. Most were made out of brass and steel, but some were made out of bronze. Those that were made out of a bronze/copper alloy are incredibly rare.

Morgan Silver Dollars

Morgan Silver dollars come from a wide variety of years, ranging from anything from 1879 to 1921. These are considered to be some of the strongest coins for coin collectors in the United States and abroad. For one, the coin is known as incredibly rare. No matter the year, these different coins are hard to get a hold of. And add to your collection. There are some that are harder to get a hold of than others, like the 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar. These coins generally did not see circulation, meaning that most of them are in mint condition. This simply raises their value and cost.

The $20 Double Eagle

The United States minted Gold Double Eagles, coins that were worth $20 and were made out of a 90% gold alloy. The coins were put into circulation from 1850 to 1933. These coins have become incredibly rare, and are some of the most sought after in the world. The 1933 has the special distinction of being the hardest to find. This was the final year of the Double Eagle, a year that was never supposed to actually see circulation. Anyone who holds this coin will hold a pricey piece – the last coin found went up for auction and sold for nearly $8 million.

You do not need to try to add these coins to your collection to be able to have a good and strong collection. These are simply some of the coins that serious coin collectors enjoy hunting for. These are prized possessions that are for those who are serious about coin collecting, looking past values in an attempt to simply have coins that make them happy. If you want to have a collection that makes you satisfied and engaged, look into these rare coins and find the ones that you would like to hunt down for your collection.

American Silver Eagles have been minted in the United States since 1986. These are the official silver bullion coins of the United States, guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of silver that’s 99.9% pure. A troy ounce is actually slightly heaver than a typical ounce of weight, because it’s not measured by weight but rather by grains. A grain is a unit of measure used where absolute precision is crucial, as in archery to weigh arrow heads, and in ballistics to weigh powder and bullets. An ounce is between 28 and 29 grains, and is a very specific number that goes out to 9 decimal places. A troy ounce is over 31 grains, in a number that goes out to 7 decimal places. A troy ounce is the measurement always used for black powder, precious metals and gemstones.

Silver Eagles have their one troy ounce weight and silver content certified by the United States Mint, and are authorized by the US Congress. A proof version of these coins is produced specifically for collectors. These coins have been produced by three mints. Coins marked with a P were minted in Philadelphia, with earlier coins bearing an S for San Francisco and the most recent silver coins marked with a W on the reverse side, which stands for West Point.

The front or obverse of Silver Eagles is based on the “Walking Liberty” design that appeared originally on half-dollars minted between 1916 and 1947. Designed the Adolph Weinman, it became a favorite and one of the best-loved coin designs in American history, so it was chosen for the Silver Eagles. The back or reverse of the coins feature a heraldic eagle.

The face value of Silver Eagles is $1, but the silver content causes the value of these coins to vary with the markets. Because of the different minting, it’s best to look into reference books to find the value of any coins you’re interested in purchasing. Because these coins have been struck in such huge numbers, the value is often not as high as one might expect, even for proofs. Most can be purchased for $25, with that number fluctuating along with the silver market prices. Some years with lower minting can go for over $100, and the boxed anniversary set issued in 2006 that went for $100 each now commands over three times that, because only 250,000 were created. Some rare dates can cost thousands of dollars, but without an up to date reference book it’s difficult to know which are more valuable.

When looking at Silver Eagles do your research and become familiar with the more rare coins, and those which can be found almost anywhere. As with most things, eBay is an excellent source for Silver Eagles of the more rare varieties. One good strategy for investors is to buy the current year’s Silver Eagles and work your way backwards through the years. This can make the collecting more fun and interesting, and give you time to investigate the more valuable minting and dates.

This is because the value of the coin now has a lot to do with the value of the coin in the future. This is because something which is rare now will only stand to become rarer as time goes on. This is why numismatists try to hedge their bets on which collector coin values will rise in the future and by what rate. This is something which can be distinguished by getting to know the factors which control the values of the coins.

There are many different factors which will cause a coin to increase in value. Among these factors there are three which affect collector coin values more than anything. As long as you know what these factors are, you will be able to tie in everything else which happens in the economy to understand how much more your coins will increase in value over time. The main factors include rarity, grading and the government. The actions or changes of any of these factors will have a major impact on the value of your coins.

The Rare Factor

One of the most important factors in how valuable a coin will be is how rare a coin is. This trumps all when determining collector coin values because if there are no other coins like it, the grade of the coin will not matter. There is nothing to compare it to. This is why the 1933 Saint-Gaudens coin is one of the most sought after coins. There is only one available which can be legally purchased and its whereabouts are unknown. Interestingly enough, there are ten coins which are in dispute currently. If they are released back to the owner giving her the right to own them, it will destroy the value of the coin.

The Grading Factor

Dr. William Herbert Sheldon created the Sheldon Scale for grading coins in 1948. Since then it has become the standard which all coins are graded by. The place a coin falls on the scale will determine its collector coin values. The more perfect the coin is the higher up the scale it is graded and the more money it will fetch. This is why any coin which is considered to be among the Mint State coins is among the highest valued coins.

Factoring in the Government

The government from time to time will take actions which will increase the rarity of an item or will introduce new coins which will increase the focus on the original coins. Any of these actions will increase the collector coin values. Of course other changes like decreeing that all 1933 Double Eagles are legal to own would have devastating effects on the market. The coin which was once worth $8 million will suddenly plummet in price. The new going rate will be a fraction of that which will crush some collections where the collector paid a premium for the coin.

If you are serious about coin collecting but cannot further your collection through your local stores, you will want to consider online shopping.

The first thing that you should do when looking at an online store is to check credentials. If it is an online auction site, you will want to check their auction credentials. Others than that, look for any associations that the website may be attached to and research those associations. There will be online stores who do not have these connections that are still reliable – these connections will simply help you to better understand the safety of using a site.

Check Online Reviews

Online reviews will often be your window into the companies and websites you are looking into. Websites that are scamming their customers are going to be called out for it online. If you search online and notice that a website has a growing number of complaints, stay away from that company and website and find a different website.

Check Payment Options

If you are going to purchase coins online you are going to want to find a website with reliable methods of purchase. PayPal is going to be the type of payment that you will want to see, follow by credit card payments. You should never give banking number information to a website during a purchase.

Check Refund Policy

One of the ways for you to find a reliable online store is to check the refund policy and search online reviews to make sure that refund policy is upheld. You should be able to send a coin back if it is not what you thought you were getting or is not what the description led you to believe you would be getting. If you find a website that states that all sales are final, you may want to move on to another website.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for you to find the rare coins that you are looking for online. For everyone one bad online dealer there is a wealth of reputable dealers who are looking to connect you with the coins that you want. Take the time to look for these stores and practice these tips as you shop in these online stores. You will be able to find a reputable dealer and will be able to find exactly what you are looking for.

Rather than obtaining or acquiring their stock from a factory or manufacturer however, they obtain their coins from the public instead. Classic types of rare coins have to be acquired from more advanced collectors or from auctions but lesser rare coins can still show up just about anywhere including in your normal pocket change. Below are some coins that are often ignored by your average person despite being capable of bringing in real money, should a hobbyist notice it and offer it for sale to people interested in rare coin collecting.

If it weren’t for the diligence of some rapid coin collectors interested in rare coin collecting, many of the coins in the following list would go completely unnoticed. These coins are often found by way of careful scrutiny.

The 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter, on coins featuring an extra leaf.

On some of the Wisconsin quarters minted in 2004, there is an extra leaf either below the corn husk or at the very base of the husk. The value of these coins ranges from $50 to $100 dollars.

The 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar from Cheerios

These coins were placed randomly in a number of Cheerios cereal boxes after being packed in protective plastic sheets. These coins exhibit more detail than the later production coins. The value of these coins is as yet undetermined.

The 5c Doubled Monticello from 1939

This is a 1939 Jefferson nickel, and while this coin is relatively easy to find, locating the doubled die reverse is not going to be as easy. The value for these coins is between $30 dollars and $500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.

D/horizontal D 5 cent piece from 1942

This Jefferson coin is not the same Wartime silver alloy, but rather it is the previous variety which is a copper and nickel alloy. More than 14 million coins were minted, which was a fairly large mint for the time period. The coins struck from the die with the error are relatively elusive, but still possible to be found. The value for these coins is between $30 dollars and $500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.

The 1955 Double-Die Cent

This is perhaps the kind of the doubled dies, as it has spectacular doubling. They were originally discovered in coin rolls. Nearly the entire output from the improperly struck die managed to reach to circulation, so you will really never known when one of these true beauties is going to show up. The value for these coins is between $500 dollars and $1,500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.

The world of coin collecting is slightly different than many other forms of collecting, catching may first-time collectors somewhat off guard.

If you are thinking about getting into coin collecting and becoming a coin collectors there are some customs that you will want to focus on. Understanding the customs of coin collecting will help you to smoothly join this interesting and unique community.

Respecting the Coins

One of the major customs of coin collecting comes in the form of the interactions that you have with others coins. You should respect the collections of others just as you would respect your own. Even if you are looking at the coins to purchase them, you should take care when trying to examine them.

If you want to take a closer look, be sure to ask the owner o the collection if you can pick up the coins. They may not want people to touch them, or they may want people to use gloves when touching any part of their collection. While you may not treat your coins the same way, you should respect their wishes and do as they ask.

The same rule goes for any coins that you may want to take a closer look at while at a coin collector shop. Talk to the coin collector of the shop and ask them for a closer look at the coins. They may provide you with gloves, tell you that they will hold the coins for you, or tell you that you are free to look at the coins as you wish.

Respecting the Negotiations

One of the most important customs in the world of coin collecting comes when you negotiate for a coin. It is important for you to be respectful and practice good etiquette when trying to negotiate a price down. While it is normal for people to negotiate prices down, there are some rules to follow. Do not try to lowball the price of the coin by too much – this can be disrespectful to the person selling the coin. Do not become upset or agitated when they will not give you the price that you are looking for. While you may firmly decline and step away from negotiations, anger will hurt your case and hurt any future negotiations with this individual.

It is possible to completely ignore some of these customs and still have a coin collection. You will simply find that it is difficult for you to command respect with your coin collecting peers. It is important for you to keep close connections and relations with those that you collect with. A failure to hold up some of these customs could lead to broken relationships – you may not longer have anyone to rely on for the different coins that you are interested in getting. Be sure to focus on these customs to ensure that you are respected in the coin collecting community.

Coins & Paper Money -> Bullion -> Silver

People buy silver bullion coins for a few different reasons. Some buy them because of the precious metal content as an investment and buffer against inflation. Some people buy them because they fear that one day our popular currency will become worthless, and they want to be prepared with the only kind of money that would likely be worth anything in that case. They know they could use gold and silver coins to barter for goods and services if paper money were repudiated. And some buy bullion coins because they’re coin collectors and they want to add these brilliant pieces to their collections.

If you want to buy silver bullion coins for investment purposes, then your true investment in the silver lies in not how many coins you buy necessarily, but how many ounces of silver you end up owning because of those coins. In this case, it doesn’t matter if the coins can be used as currency, so foreign coins which contain high amounts of silver are as good an investment as United States coins, or vice versa, depending on where you live. The age of the coins is irrelevant, too.

Silver bullion coins minted since 1965 contain stamps showing the purity of the silver within them and the silver coins pre-dating this do not, but that makes them no less valuable as an investment. Many people think the only silver bullion coins used in the US are dollars like the 1 ounce American Eagle, which is a popular collector’s coin. But before 1965, several types of coins contained 90% silver, like dimes, quarters and half-dollars. These and coins like the American Silver Eagle, which contains 1 ounce of pure silver, are a good investment and in a worst-case scenario where the value of paper money dropped substantially, these coins could be used as money.

Survivalists who invest in silver bullion coins typically purchas as many coins dating since 1965 as possible. They believe that it’s likely that one day our money system will collapse and the only real currency that one could survive on would be silver and gold bullion. Since the silver content is stamped on each coin produced since 1965 showing that it’s an ounce of pure silver, they believe that it will be easier to get people to accept those coins as payment in the event of a financial collapse. For these purposes, they’ll typically buy $1000 face value bags, or bags in smaller increments, rather than individual coins.

For collectors, the earlier coins are often considered junk coins, because they have little numismatic worth. Silver bullion coins for collectors are typically silver proofs or coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, only if they really want the coin and can’t acquire a mirror-like proof. If you’re looking on eBay for collector coins, a popular place to find them, you’ll need to do some research on the individual silver coins so you can tell the difference between BU and proofs, as often they look similar.

These individuals are going to spend large amounts of their income, both happy and excited to spend the money when they find the coins that they want.

If you are thinking about getting into coin collecting, you should work to understand the life of a coin collector. It will help you to better understand what you are going to be doing and how much passion and thought you are going to have to put into your collection.

Budgeting

If you are going to get serious about coin collecting you are going to need to budget. Serious coin collector individuals have a budget to help ensure that they do not spend too much money on their collection. Many will also set specific budget for different coins that they want. It helps to make sure that they do not overspend for coins, as they do not want to spend far over the actual value of the coin. Budgeting is key to a successful collection, as it promotes and ensures longevity.

Cleaning and Displaying

Some people will try to get into serious coin collecting without thinking about the changes that are found. Many of these people are surprised to find out that they need to clean their coins and that they need to consider more serious and professional ways of displaying the coins. You need to clean all of the coins to make sure that they stay in mint condition – those who do not take care of their coins will find that the coins lose value and can be damaged. If yo are more serious about collecting, you are also going to want to display your coins. These displays take time to build and require some money to put together.

Negotiating

If you do not work on your negotiation skills when you work to collect coins, you will pay too much. Your collection will not be as successful, and may wind up costing you far too much money. Practice your negotiation skills and do not be scared to negotiation. Learning how to work prices down and knowing when to walk away when the other party will not back down are key aspects of serious collecting. You will spend less money and will increase the value of your own collection.

It is important for all to understand that they can turn coin collecting into anything that they want to. You can take this as seriously or as light-heartedly as you would like. Just know that this is a type of hobby that is incredibly easy to become immersed in. You should fully understand the life of a serious coin collector and think about whether or not this is the type of serious collecting you can handle. You may find that this is right up your alley, or that you want to take collecting less seriously and know what you what to avoid.
