Start with your pocket change

Start out by studying coins you pull from your pockets, or failing that, some old coins from your attic, on your floor, or out in public. As a novice coin collector, it makes no sense to spend a lot of your money on coins if you do not understand their nuances thoroughly. Spend a good bit of time getting acquainted with the more ordinary coins. Familiarize yourself with the designs and letterings and images, their types and styles.

Choose the coin types you want to collect

To make the hobby of coin collecting more interesting, choose coins of a type that you have a real interest in. Bullion coins made of gold or silver as an example can attract collecting investors due to the market worth and appeal of Bullion.

Very old coins such as Roman coins, Byzantine coins and Celtic coins are capable of being quite interesting when it comes to collectors that are interested in collecting not only coins of the world, but also coins that come from history and from long forgotten ancient civilizations. There are a wide variety of different types of coins that are available in this market. What this means is that all that you really have to do is to perform a little bit of searching in order to determine what it is that you really want as a coin collector and enthusiast.

Organize your collection and maintain your coins of the world

If you are simply gathering your coins in a haphazard way, then you are not really collecting coins, but rather you are simply hoarding them. Without taking the time to organize your coin collection, you could actually end up missing out on some truly valuable additions to your collection.

You are going to want to purchase either coin collecting software, or a coin catalog that will allow you to arrange all of your coins of the world in a logical fashion. Software programs are designed to help you keep your coins in order using up to date database listings where you can search by mint mark, date, type, denomination, year and other details of the coins that you are collecting.

You are also going to want to buy all of the necessary supplies for collecting coins of the world, as well as for storing and displaying them. This is going to include coin albums, coin display cases, slab coin holders, envelopes, coin tubes and boxes. All of these supplies have unique purposes and uses, so make sure that you are choosing the ones that are going to help you the most when it comes to organizing and storing and displaying your unique coin collection.

For at least the past century, people have been taking this hobby much more seriously and now there are a myriad of different coin collecting book options to choose from because people from all over the world are writing guides on coin collecting. The people that write these coin collecting books are doing roaring business within the industry because there is a great amount of importance in having a well written coin collecting book to value your coin collection.

Each coin collector tends to have a favorite coin collecting book depending on what their individual needs are. There are general guides and there are also more specific coin collecting book options such as those that focus on coins from a specific period of time or from a specific country around the world. The best coin collecting books are those that provide images, because these images make it possible to line your coin up with the real thing, determining not only whether or not you have properly identified your coin but also to see what grade your coin is based on eyeballing it.

Some coin collecting books allow you to search for coins by certain features, such as coins featuring a face, or a monument, or a sword and shield. Some people collect coins based on these features, so being able to identify them this way is very useful for some coin collectors. In other words, being able to consult a coin collecting book whenever you need advice or feedback on a particular coin, can be really useful and helpful for most coin collectors.

Having a coin collecting book is truly an asset if you are interested in collecting coins. Not only will it help you identify the coins in your collection, but it will also make it possible for you to place a value on each of your coins so that you can determine what your collection is worth. Having values for all of your coins is not actually necessary if you are just collecting for fun, but it is still really useful to know what you have and what your coins are actually worth, especially if you have any valuable coins in your collection that should be insured for safe keeping.

Coin collecting has managed to become a profitable endeavor. Having a coin collecting book that lets you know what your coins are worth and what types of treasures you have collected is definitely a good thing. It allows you to know how far you’ve come in your coin collection, and also gives you a positive outlook on where you can take your coin collection in the future.

There are a number of different types of coin collecting software out there that are designed to help you properly organize, sort and maintain your coin collection no matter how small or how large it has grown to be.

Many types of coin collecting software have now been made available to a variety of people throughout the world. It may take some time to get the hang of a piece of coin collecting software, but there are many benefits including the ability to know what types of coins you have, what types of coins you need, and what your coin collection is worth on the market.

There are pieces of coin collecting software that are intended to help you deal with rare coin collecting. They are specialized types of programs that were designed to be used on computers, and they have become truly necessary as tools for monitoring and keeping track of all of your coins, rare or not. So for example, if you are from the United States, then you may want to collect United States coins first and foremost. This is because you are already familiar with the coin denominations where you live, making the collection much easier to put together. This is definitely a great way for you to begin when you are just learning how to collect coins, but as your coin collection grows, you may want to create a world coin collection rather than just a local one. World coins are often just as easy to come by, and they offer new facets to your coin collection no matter which world coins you decide to collect.

You will find coins coming from nearly every single country all over the world. You should begin to collect coins based on what information you can find. If you cannot find information on a particular type of world coin, that does not mean that it is rare, but just that it will require some extra work for you to find the worth of the coin. There are a number of websites and other publications that will help you look at the world coins that are available to you and your world coin collection.

When you finally begin to collect world coins, you will discover that there is a whole new world waiting for you. You will learn about the history and the culture that influenced each individual world coin, for example. You are going to learn about each country where you find a world coin and you are going to learn about what inspired those world coins into creation.

There are fewer dealers out there that will have world coin opportunities for you, so world coins are often more rare than United States coins. To some investors, world coins do not make good investments, but to other investors, they do. Collecting world coins is going to require a lot of time, thought and research. You need to read coin collecting books, online guides, websites, newsletters, magazines and anything else that you can get your hands on to read so that you can become well versed in everything that the world coin realm has to offer you. You need to understand how foreign currencies and the United States dollar stack up against one another.

If you are looking for a widely circulated world coin, consider pennies from each country all over the world. These coins are valuable to someone that collects for the sake of collecting but not necessarily for the sake of investing. Collecting world coins with small values is a great way to grow your collection without spending too much money, so consider this if you are just getting your world coin off the ground and want a lot of unique coins without a big investment.

Many websites assist parents and friends of those who are interested in beginning coin collecting to learn the basics about coins and what’s available. Once a person, including a child, is educated about coins, they may begin a fascinating hobby that will interest them well into adulthood.

What about the great site about starting a coin collection for four dollars? It’s a simple and fun way to get a child (or an adult) interested in starting a coin collection and excited about what they might find.

Simply collecting pocket change for several months can be another fun method for sharing the love of coins. Without examining it, dump your change into a jar or bucket every day for some time.

When you’ve collected a substantial number of coins, bring the beginning coin collection novice in and have them examine each coin. If you’ve got enough knowledge to help them identify unusual coins, then you can help them divide the promising from the not so promising.

If you don’t trust your expertise, use the simple rule of finding the unusual and looking them up. Look for very old dates, different fronts or backs of common coins, and unusual words on coins.

A beginning coin collecting activity of searching online or studying a basic coin collecting book is a great way to learn about coins and spark some interest.

The website for the U.S. Mint is a great site for the beginner, or even the more advanced collector. It has a wealth of information, news, history, games and cartoons about coin collecting, and even a “collector’s club” for those who are beginning coin collecting or are simply interested in learning about coins.

The MegaPenny Project is a great look at how you can focus your collecting. It has what may be the most in-depth look at a single coin that you can find online. The analysis of size, weight and comparisons makes the subject come to life.

The Ancient Coins for Education project offers teachers and others interested in educating children complete lesson plans centered on an “archeological simulation” where ancient coins become a learning tool once they are discovered by an educator.

Children will not only learn about coins, but will learn about archaeology and ancient life as well.

Another approach to beginning coin collecting is to choose a particular coin and do some in depth research with a child or new collector. The Morgan dollar, for example, is a fascinating coin with an interesting appearance and an unusual history.

There are two different types of Morgan dollars since the coins were struck in two different ways. The finishes are so strikingly different, it’s a pleasure for those beginning coin collecting to work with them.

There are other fun coins to introduce to a beginner, like the new Lincoln Rail Splitter penny. You might also begin with a study into the “heads” and “tails” of coins and how to tell the difference when the front has no portrait.

As a link to the ancient world, coins are an incredibly popular way to capture this history. Thanks to the minting process and the metals that were used, we can still enjoy many ancient coins today. Greek coins are increasingly becoming more popular and their unique designs enhance any coin collection. For those that are looking to collect these coins, but are uncertain as to whether or not they are dealing with an authentic collectible, there are a few guidelines.

1. Check the Wear

An ancient coin will understandably look a bit old. In many cases, you are dealing with coins that were produced thousands of years ago. If the Greek coin you are looking at it is shiny, or has no visible signs of wear, there is a good chance that it is not authentic. Most collectors do not restore these coins since their wear is a sign of their true age. If you do find a coin that is in remarkable condition, there is a chance that it is authentic, but the chances are few and far between.

2. Check the Back

Ancient Greek coins will typically have a name engraved on the back, but it won’t be of a king or of anyone incredibly important. Instead, in this culture, it was customary for the person that actually minted the coin to put their own name on it. This was a unique practice and it offers a great way for the average collector to be able to authenticate a Greek coin. Since the vast majority of these coins bear some sort of engraving on the back, this will help you determine whether or not the coin is authentic.

3. Check the Design

Minting equipment was understandably not as advanced as today’s equipment and that means that very often, the designs on Greek coins will not be perfect. This is actually desirable and if you do find a coin that is too perfect, it is a major sign that it may not be authentic. Take the time to thoroughly examine the coin. If you cannot spot any flaws, there is a very good chance that it is not authentic.

4. Check the Certificate

Many ancient coins that have already been authenticated will have an accompanying certificate. While this can of course be forged, you can follow up with the person that did the appraisal and authentication. If you cannot contact them or they do not have any knowledge of the coin you are dealing with, it is best to save your money and find another Greek coin to buy.

5. Check the Shape

Last but not least, coins made during this period were quite often not perfectly round. Look for a slight deviation on your Greek coin. If it is slightly off, then this is a very good sign that it is authentic. Remember, many of these Greek coins were hand made, one at a time and whenever you are dealing with that kind of process, the chances for imperfections are very high.

The value of a 1902 Barber dime varies, depending mostly on the condition of the dime. While the face value may be only 10 cents, they’re often worth several dollars—sometimes hundreds of dollars. The best way to determine the value of your Barber dime is to consult an up to date coin value guide. The best way to find the most current information is by looking on numismatic websites and auction sites where these dimes are available to see the most recent pricing on them.

The history of the dime in general goes back to 1796, with the front of the coin bearing a Liberty head and the reverse featuring an eagle. The dime is the smallest US coin, and its appearance has changed many times over the years. A 1902 Barber dime is so named because it was a coin designed by Charles E. Barber. While the earliest dimes changed many times, our current dime has been the same since 1946. Our current design is smaller than the original dime, and the materials used today are different, as well.

The first coins representing a tenth of a dollar or ten cents were actually called dismes, minted in 1792, but weren’t circulated. The first actual dimes appeared in 1796 and are referred to by numismatics today as the Draped Bust dime. These coins bore no value on them anywhere, unlike today’s dimes which clearly say they’re worth 10 cents. In 1809 the design was changed to what’s now known as the Capped Bust dime, which bore the marking 10C on the reverse. Neither of these early dimes was minted each year they were available, but a dime has been minted almost every year without fail since 1827. The Barber dime appeared in 1892, with the 1902 Barber dime representing only one year of the design’s 24-year history, ending in 1916. The previous design, though, was minted far longer. The Seated Liberty design debuted in 1837 and was minted for 54 years, until the Barber dime took its place. The only dime that has been minted longer is the Roosevelt dime that has now been minted for 62 years.

The 1902 Barber dime isn’t the most valuable dime available of its design. The 1894-S has been known to go for more than one million dollars at auction—the highest amount ever drawn for a single dime—because only 24 of these particular coins were struck, and of those, only 9 still exist as far as collectors and the US Treasury are aware.

Still, the 1902 Barber dime carries much more than the value of 10 cents. The coins have silver content, so even a coin worn practically smooth carries scrap silver value. A common method in determining the value of this coin is how clear the inscription of “Liberty” is on Lady Liberty’s headband on the front of the coin. The less worn and more distinct the inscription, the more valuable the coin. Proofs and circulated coins alike are easily found on eBay.

You might think a half dime is simply a modern nickel. But half dimes were actually silver coins worth 5 cents that were minted before the coins that eventually became our modern nickels. They were authorized in 1792, much smaller than the dimes of the time and much thinner, giving them the actual appearance of being almost half a dime. When lobbyists fought to have nickel included in the creation of new coins in the 1860s, the new three- and five-cent coins pushed out the older silver coins so the original half dimes were last minted in 1873.

The US half dime was minted from 1794 to 1873, and was one of the original coins minted in the United States. The first design is known as the Flowing Hair design because of the Liberty’s flowing hair, but was only struck for 2 years before being changed to the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design. This design also lasted for only 2 years, before half dime minting stopped and wasn’t resumed against until 1800. This design was known as the Large Eagle design, with the Great Seal of the United States appearing on the reverse of the coin. These were struck until 1805, and then no more were minted until 1829.

The half dime that returned in 1829 now bore the words “five cents” instead of half dime. The design appearing on this coin lasted until 1837, when a Seated Liberty design once again bearing the words half dime was minted. New minting in 1837 saw the silver content lessen, though the coins remained the same size. In 1840 the design was changed to include drapery and stars, and wasn’t changed again significantly after that. After the Civil War in 1866, nickel-based 5-cent coins were circulated at the same time as silver half dimes but 1873 saw the last half dimes minted to make way for the 5-cent coins.
Of all the half dimes available today, the 1802 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle is one of the most rare and collectible. Only a little over 13,000 of them were struck, but only about 16 are known to exist today. The half dime is still an interesting conversation piece, aside from its collector and real-world value.

Because the silver content of the half dime dropped long before minting stopped, people tended to try to acquire the earlier half dimes so more of the newer coins were struck to replace them. The most valuable coins are the earlier ones with higher silver content, though some were actually minted without the name of the country because of a die problem, and these are valuable novelties for coin collectors.

The half dime is a fairly rare coin so the best places to find one in good condition are places like eBay where a huge variety of sellers can present their items. The best way to find the value of a coin is to consult a coin guide, and compare that to the most recent information you can find online.

Probably one of the easiest coins to acquire for a coin collection is the wheat penny. This coin was a United States penny minted from 1909 to 1958. The coin goes by many names, including the Lincoln Wheat Cent and Wheatie, and was worth 1 cent at the time it was minted. While few are worth more than that today, some uncirculated mintings have gone for thousands of dollars at auction.

Most of us who had grandparents or parents who kept pennies in jars have been able to search through those coins and find at least one wheat penny or two. The front of the penny looks indistinguishable, at first glance at least, from the pennies minted today because they still bear the bust of Lincoln on the front (or obverse) side of the coin. The back of course is different, because the two wheat stalks that were on the reverse of the wheat penny were replaced with the Lincoln memorial in 1959.

The change in the reverse design, however, isn’t the only different between the wheat penny and the modern penny. And there are even variations among wheat pennies, depending on the year the penny was minted. Some of the wheat pennies produced in the beginning featured the initials of the sculptor, Victor David Brenner, on the reverse side of the coin below the wheat stalks.

This was a cause of controversy, however, and in 1918 the initials VDB were moved to the front of the coin. You must look very closely at a wheat penny from those early years and you’ll see the tiny initials on the bottom of Lincoln’s bust, below his shoulder. The coins produced before the change was made in California are more valuable than most other types of these pennies, because less than half a million were produced by that mint before the public complained enough about the prominent initial display to have it changed.

These early pennies are called “VDB” cents due to the placement of the initials. If you happen to find a 1909 wheat penny with those initials on the back below the wheat stalks that was minted in San Francisco, California, even if the coin is in poor condition, it could be worth hundreds of dollars. Mint coins with that configuration can go for much, much more. VDB cents minted in Philadelphia hold much less value, because more were produced. The 1914-D coins are also typically quite valuable.

A wheat penny with a minting error can also be valuable, such as the 1922 penny that looks plain because the die was full and couldn’t imprint the coin, and one produced in 1955 which appears minted twice, known as the doubled die coin.

If you can find lots of wheat pennies for very little money, you might enjoy looking for these different variations. Someone without an interest in the wheat penny who puts several up for auction in a lot might not even be aware that they’re selling a gem.

There are a number of different ways that you can buy gold, not only as jewelry or gold bars but also in the form of a gold coin collection as well. Buying into a gold coin collection is a much better option, it is also much simpler and it can cost you as little as $40 to get started. Another benefit of buying into a gold coin collection is that you can easily store golf coins in ways that storing other forms of gold may not be feasible. You can easily store your gold coin collection anywhere in your home or you can have them put in a safe or stored in the bank for safe keeping depending on your needs.

There are many different ways that you can create a gold coin collection depending on what your interests are. There are all kinds of different gold coins that are available all over the world, including American Eagle golf coins, South African Krugerrands, UK Sovereigns and Australian golf coins, Canadian Maple Leaf coins and even Chinese Panda golf coins. When you start out your very own gold coin collection, the best coins to buy are the more common and more cost effective gold coins such as the Golf Sovereigns from Australia or the UK or the American Eagles for example. Keep in mind that there is never a fixed weight or a fixed size for gold coins, but rather they are measured based on their value and their weight, and these characteristics are going to vary depending on the size of the coin.

The unit of measurement that is used for your gold coin collection will be the gram. In the past, however, gold coins were measured in troy ounces which are parts of ounces. The purity of a gold bar is measured based on 999 parts per 1000 parts, which is as pure as gold is capable of getting. Most coins that will be in your gold coin collection are going to be 917 parts in 1000, because they put a little bit of other types of metal in the coins in order to make them easier to make during the minting process.

When you are planning to create a gold coin collection and it involves shopping online or offline, make sure that you have all the information that you need to know to purchase the coin such as the make, the name and the type of coin. Make sure that this information is being displayed so that you know that you are buying the right coin for your gold coin collection. If you are buying your gold coin collection online, make sure that you see pictures and that the price quoted by the seller matches up with the worth of the coin, otherwise move on to a more reputable online seller.
