Wedding dresses are a big business today, but many people prefer the look of an antique wedding dress to the more modern gowns. Choosing a vintage dress is certainly one way to make your wedding unique, as it’s highly unlikely that any or your friends or peers will be getting married in the same or even remotely similar dress.

Why choose from a catalog or the racks of a bridal store when you can choose an antique wedding dress to help make your day special. The workmanship and details in an older dress can be amazing, while to get that level of detail today you’d spend hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars more for a dress. If you have an old-fashioned sensibility, an older dress can give your wedding a more vintage atmosphere and make you think of time past.

If you’re shopping for an antique wedding dress, a piece of good advice is not go too antique. While with most antiques, older is better, with wedding dresses or any kind of clothing, older dresses might be in a bad state of repair. Fabric does deteriorate and lose its shape over time, anything that might have been slightly stretchy before is probably only brittle now, thread will rot over the years, and sometimes older dresses can be on the verge of falling apart.

But an antique wedding dress, unlike simply an ordinary dress or pair of pants, has likely been worn little and handled far less than average clothing. The key is to be choosy, especially when dealing with very old dresses. If you’re looking at a dress made before 1900, you could be taking quite a bit of risk as it’s much more likely to be unable to hold up to wear. Silk chiffons from the 1920s are also, because of their style and fabrics, less likely to hold up over the years. If your heart is set on either of these, then simply be prepared that the cost to repair and restore them will be much higher than most other dresses.

Know how much you can spend on an antique wedding dress before you shop in vintage shops or online on eBay, and stick to your budget. Do figure in the cost of alterations and any restoration and repair that a seamstress might find necessary to keep the vintage dress together for you wedding. Cleaning should also be considered, as archival cleaning can sometimes cost more than you paid for the dress itself.

Don’t choose an antique wedding dress that’s in obvious visible need of repairs or has stains. While stain removal is much easier today, that stain has been on that fabric for decades making it much less likely it will come out completely, if at all.

And if you decide to purchase an antique wedding dress from an auction, measure yourself carefully to find the right dress. Sizes were different years ago than they are today, so the auction should give detailed measurements for the garment. If it doesn’t, ask for them before purchasing.

The 1920 flapper dress is commonly referred to as just a flapper, but the word flapper actually refers to much more than the garment itself, it refers to the entire sensibility of the era in the 1920s. Flapper actually referred to the women themselves, with their short skirts and dresses, their bobbed hairstyles, their love of Jazz and willingness to buck convention. Flappers were the rebels and the punk rockers of the 1920s, so to speak, looked down upon for their heavy makeup, drinking, their more-relaxed sexual lifestyles, smoking, driving and basically breaking out of the stereotypical woman’s role that had dominated society for years.

Flappers were the forerunner of the modern woman, refusing to do what society expected of them, and actually acting in a directly contradictory way, simply because they could. The 1920 flapper dress was just one part of that entire era, but one of the most recognizable symbols of it still today. Social and political change is common after a war, and the flappers era was no exception, coming on the heels of World War I and timed with the popularity of American Jazz culture reaching as far Europe.

The term flapper first appeared in a 1920 film called The Flapper. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the popular writers who helped define and popularize the flapper lifestyle, with his character Daisy and her friends often wearing a 1920 flapper dress and living the carefree flapper lifestyle as they did, and soon flappers were viewed as independent, reckless and desirable. Dorothy Parker, another popular writer from that era, was a staunch critic of flappers, calling it a fad and writing poetry to poke fun at it.

The word flapper had many uses prior to 1920. It was used as early as 1912 in the UK. Until 1920 or so it was also actually a term for a teenage girl or young woman. But with the 1920 flapper dress the popularity of the flapper lifestyle, the term took on that meaning alone. Jazz clubs were often filled with dancing, drinking, cocaine-sniffing and smoking flappers who dated with abandon. Cocaine use was legal then, but drinking alcohol was not as Prohibition was in effect, but they flew in the face of convention and the law and drank openly. Petting parties became common again. Some of the popular dances shocked older generations, like the Charleston and the Shimmy. But flappers didn’t just have fun to show rebellion, they worked outside the home and paved the way for the modern woman by voting and demanding their rights. The lifestyle couldn’t last once the Great Depression hit, and America took a much more conservative turn. A 1920 flapper dress is a great keepsake of that era, whether for its style and freedom, or its importance in the women’s movement.

An authentic 1920 flapper dress found on eBay can range in price from a couple hundred dollars to well over one-thousand or more, depending on the style and condition, and whether it’s associated with a famous figure from that era.

Sports Memorabilia -> Fan Apparel and Souvenirs -> Racing-Formula 1

One of the most popular types of sports merchandise is apparel, particularly hats and T-shirts. So it stands to reason that Formula 1 T-shirts and other merchandise that celebrates the most popular racing in the world are a hit with fans. Formula 1 racing sprang from the European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 30s. In 1946, the FIA or Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile standardized its rules for racing, giving them the collective name of Formula A. The name Formula 1 was adopted and made official in 1950 when the first Formula 1 championship race was held.

The “Formula” stands for the set of rules, which are very specific, limiting everything from the width of the cars to the space between each wheel and the body, to the electrical system, engine and even the way the cars are stored the night before the race. Unlike Indy races and other races which start with a flag wave, Formula 1 races start with a set of 5 lights that come on from left to right one second apart, and then go out together after several seconds. For Formula 1 fans who have specific teams or drivers that they love, Formula 1 T-shirts are great unique collectibles with each representing a favorite.

Shirts are also one of the most affordable fan souvenirs. Formula 1 T-shirts range in price from $15 or so for the less expensive shirts and anywhere from $55 – $75 for new, hot items like shirts for popular drivers like Finnish racer Kimi Räikkönen, who became the highest paid driver in motor sports when he joined the Ferrari team in 2007. Collectible T-shirts that are no long printed can be in high demand, depending on the driver, the team, and the current status of both in the racing circuit.

Formula 1 cars race at speeds up to 225 miles per hour, or 350 kilometers per hour, making it one of the most dangerous sports in the world. When accidents occur, especially those resulting in death, naturally merchandise featuring the driver who has been injured or killed become more valuable and more in demand. “Double S” T-shirts, for example, are one of the most collectible of the Formula 1 T-shirts, because they celebrate the late driver Aryton Senna da Silva, who died racing when he was second in championship points in 1994.

The current European Formula 1 teams are McLaren, Ferrari, BMW Sauber, Renault, Toyota, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Williams, Honda, Force India and Super Aguri. Formula 1 T-shirts featuring those teams and their drivers and currently available for collecting, but past driver T-shirts are items that fans particularly enjoy collecting. Online auctions are always a great place for finding new and classic shirts. If you’re looking for a real collectible Formula 1 T-shirt and not just one that features your favorite, then be sure the shirt is official Formula 1 merchandise and not an imitation made by another manufacturer.
