Using the Internet for Antique Appraisals

Antique AppraisalsDo you know how to use the internet for the purpose of obtaining antique appraisals? There is no reason why you cannot make good use of the internet in order to determine the value of your collectibles and your antiques. Keep reading.

So, do you think that you may have something that is valuable on your hands? Are you trying to determine how much it is going to be worth? There are a myriad of different websites online for antiques and collecting, and many of them do offer plenty of information on the concept of antique appraisals. Here are some things that you should keep in mind when it comes to using the internet while searching for antique appraisals. Keep in mind that these tips will improve your capability of getting the right answers and the right price for your vintage or antique items.

1 – Never simply walk up and ask an antiques dealer to tell you what something is worth, because the standard response is going to be to ask how much you want to get for it. Many antiques dealers have spent years and years acquiring their knowledge, and they are very rarely ever going to want to pass out free advice to a complete stranger, even if they do otherwise specialize in antique appraisals. Do not sell you item to the person that you asked to evaluate it for you, because these people make their living by buying low and then selling high, and you may end up being taken for a ride.

2 – Next, when it comes to antique appraisals you are going to want to understand that quality plays a really important role in any antique appraisals that you receive. Just because you have something that happens to be old, that does not mean that it is inherently valuable. The better the condition of something is, generally the more it is going to be worth, but take this info with a grain of salt because there’s no telling what you have on your hands or how much it is worth until you get the antique appraisals you are looking for.

3 – Finally, no matter what information that you receive regarding the value behind your collectible or antique, you need to understand that antique appraisals are only worth what someone is really willing to pay you for the item. Just because your antique doorknob is priced at $100 in a price guide, that does not mean you’ll fetch that price for it on eBay. You need to keep this in mind because there is a relationship between antique appraisals and what people are actually willing to pay for things, and both numbers matter in the grand scheme of things.

Antique Tube Radio

Collectibles -> Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone -> Radios -> Tube Radios: Pre 1930, 1930-49, 1950-59, 1960-Now

Antique Tube Radio If you are in the market for an antique tube radio to restore, or you are looking for a working model, there are a few things that you will need to know before making your purchase. It is relatively easy to find broken antique tube radios, but finding them in good working order can be a bit difficult. If you are purchasing your antique tube radio online, then you will need to ask a few questions before proceeding with the sale.

  1. Is the original documentation included or will they provide you with a schematic? This is vital in case you need to repair the unit or if it is in need of restoration. Without a schematic, you are pretty much lost. While it is possible to find old copies of these user manuals and schematics, it is much easier to simply have it included with the unit. If the seller does not offer this, you may want to think twice about purchasing the antique tube radio.
  2. Is the unit in working order, and if not, does the seller know what is wrong with it? It is a lot easier to know what you are getting into before you buy your radio. Be wary of vague answers unless the seller truly does not know much about radios. If the listing simply says “does not work,” but offers no additional information, it could have a myriad of problems that will be costly to fix. It is best to err on the side of caution and look for a radio that is in either working order, or where the seller knows exactly what needs to be fixed.
  3. Is the power cord still attached? This is a problem that most buyers overlook. Finding old power cords for antique tube radios is pretty easy, installing them is a whole other matter. If you are not familiar with this process, you will need to hire someone to do it for you. This is yet another expense that will have to be factored into the overall purchase price. Look for radios that still have their original cords, or find one that has a proper cord that was installed by a professional.
  4. What method of shipping/handling will the seller use? This is actually quite important. It is very easy to break the internal parts of an antique tube radio and this will mean additional work on your part. Make sure that the seller provides with you information on how they intend to pack the radio safely and how it will be transported to your location. Make sure that you get the seller to provide you with insurance on the package, even if you have to pay extra for it.

With the right questions, you can be assured that you are getting the right antique tube radio and that you won’t have to deal with any nasty surprises or further issues that may require more money to repair.

The Truth About Vintage Collecting

winegobletThere are a number of truths that you should keep in mind when it comes to collecting wine of all types, but vintage collecting most of all. These are ten truths that you really need to keep in mind when you are embarking on a wine collecting hobby of any kind, as they will keep you honest and make sure that you really are getting the most out of your wine collecting hobby. These ten truths are so important, that it may be wise to print a copy of this post and tack it up somewhere in your wine cellar, or on your fridge if you so choose. Without further ado:

Wine Truth #1 – There are a myriad of excellent wines to choose from in every vintage, so you will never find them all. When it comes to vintage collecting, you should stop chasing vintages because you will never be able to afford even a small percentage of these wines in your lifetime.

Wine Truth #2 – Both wine mailers and wine allocations are traps. It is not worthwhile for you to be chasing cult wines of any kind, even if you are interested in vintage collecting.

Wine Truth #3 – Every single bottle in your cellar needs to be a candidate for being opened once they have reached maturity. Do not revere your prizes to such a degree that you are afraid to open them, because wine is meant to be enjoyed.

Wine Truth #4 – Keep a wine inventory. Not only for insurance purposes but also because it is fun to keep track of your collection.

Wine Truth #5 – Join the wine collecting community. Join a group of wine lovers, or several different ones. Share your knowledge and experience and gain new knowledge and new experiences to grow your enjoyment.

Wine Truth #6 – Come to learn more about vintage collecting than local merchants. This is much more important than simply pretending that you do.

Wine Truth #7 – Take advantage of special discounts and offers to expand your wine collection. Sometimes taking 10% off of a mixed case of wines is much cheaper than buying a bottle or two at their full price.

Wine Truth #8 – Do not try to make everyone you know into a wine lover. Share your love of wine and vintage wine collecting with your friends and family, but do not expect them to become aficionados.

Wine Truth #9 – When you travel, especially for special occasions, find a reason to buy new wines and bring them home. They do not have to be spectacular or vintage wines, but they will be memorable bottles with memories that you can hang onto forever.

Wine Truth #10 – Finally, share the good finds from your vintage collecting hobby with the people that enjoy wine. Share your best finds with the people that know and appreciate wine for everything that it is.
