October 18th, 2009 — Antique, Antique Rings
If you are looking for the perfect engagement ring, you just may want to consider antique rings and the sentimental value that can be associated with them. Antique rings are capable of being purchased through reputable dealers in second hand jewelry stores. You may even be able to find antique rings in your family, passed down from one generation to the next. Often men offer antique rings to their sweethearts when they propose because they understand the incredible sentimental value that can be found in a ring passed from one family member to the next through the years. Whatever way you do decide to go, just keep in mind the type of happiness that gifting antique rings can bring to a couple in love.
Once a couple has been together for a significant amount of time, there comes a point in their relationship when all thoughts turn toward longer term commitment, such as marriage for example. This is the most common point where the man will begin to wonder about proposing properly as well as choosing the right engagement ring, and one of the options that he may consider will be antique rings with sentimental value and old world flare.
The couple should be able to agree somewhat on the type of engagement ring that they like. Many men choose antique rings when they know that their beloved is interested in antique things with sentimental value. There are a wide variety of stunning antique rings out there, and many are in excellent condition despite their age. You may notice that many antique rings are distinguished easily from other rings because of how their stones are cut and how they are set. For example, diamond ring settings tend to come and go in terms of what is fashionable, so couples that do not care about what is currently trendy will definitely benefit from looking to see what types of antique rings are available to them for the purpose of engagement.
The most popular diamond cuts for antique rings from more than a century ago were the cushion cut and the mine cut, for example. These cuts were specifically designed to be shown off by the light of a candle where the many facets of the stone would be able to shine and glimmer by throwing the candle’s light back in a way that you will not see now. In other words, despite being old, antique rings are capable of being truly stunning and amazing beyond what you may find in today’s overpriced jewelry stores.
The real value in antique rings comes from rings that are a century old. Although you may find that dealers call antique rings anything from the 1950s or earlier, the true value comes from rings from before 1900. The Victorian period lasted until 1900, meaning that many antique rings come from the Victorian period, and these are the most stunning of all antique rings. The Georgian period is another excellent period for antique rings. There are plenty of eras that offer stunning antique rings, and the real trick is simply shopping around until you find a reputable dealer with the perfect antique engagement ring for your beloved.

September 28th, 2009 — Antique, Wines
When it comes to collecting different types of wine, one of the more popular options for collecting is to try out different types of rare wine. One example of a rare wine that you may want to consider is known as ice wine. Ice wine is regarded as being one of the most precious types of wine because it is only created during a particular weather condition. The ice wine variety of rare wine is primarily produced within the Northwestern Pacific area.
It seems to be an irony to many people that in our world today, anything that is created using a supreme level of quality is also made in a very small quantity, but this is how many rare wine varieties actually end up working. The highest quality and the lack of availability is what make ice wine so absolutely precious and such a rare wine.
Only a few lucky people that have enough money on hand can avail themselves of these precious products. Just as if it were a diamond, Ice Wine is also capable of falling in this elite league of rare products that we all dream about and all eventually hope to be capable of experiencing. Ice Wine is tricky to produce on account of the fact that it relies so heavily on the weather for it to be produced. When the precise necessary weather condition does arrive, the wine maker is responsible for producing this truly priceless wine in desired quantities.
The production of ice wine involves grapes that are fully ripened and temperatures between -13 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius.
The entire ice wine making process has to be completed quickly, in a very short amount of time. This is why ice wine is such a rare wine. Usually the grapes are plucked in the night time while they are frozen, and they are harvested completely by hand rather than by any other means. For a single bottle of ice wine, the entire vine worth of grapes may be required. After the grapes have been collected by the wine maker, they will be very delicately pressed because only the free running juice is harvested from the grapes. The frozen water, the sugars and other particles that are in the juice will ferment together to create this unique blend of ice wine.
In other words, this is a rare wine for a reason – It is a tricky to make variety of wine that cannot be easily made or readily made based on supply and demand. When it is made available, which is clearly rare, ice wine has to be offered at a premium price so that every bottle is cherished and cared for and collected by people that understand its rarity. If you are interested in collecting rare wine, consider adding a unique bottle of ice wine to your collection today.

September 14th, 2009 — Architectural Collectibles, Stained Glass Windows
Stained glass windows are more than just functional windows, they are works of art that can express exalted meanings or simply beautify a room. When you are shopping for antique stained glass, it’s important to understand the amount of time that went into each piece. Remember, the little imperfections that are commonly present on most stained glass windows are part of their charm and in many cases, they may actually increase the value.
The first step made by the designer is to come up with the actual design for the stained glass window. This was typically done on paper and the artist may try several different designs until they find one that works right. The colors that will be used for the window are usually determined at this phase as well. Most concept drawings for stained glass windows are nearly as beautiful as the windows themselves.
Once the artist had the design and concept ready for their stained glass window, they would need to select the glass. This process was the most time consuming and some artists would spend months trying to find just the right piece. Once the glass had been found, the next step was to start cutting it into the correct sized pieces that would later be assembled together into the window.
The mosaic of glass pieces was very important for a stained glass window. They had to be fit precisely so that they could later be soldered together. Each piece would be individually hand painted and the designer would then lay each piece out in the final design.
Once this was completed, the stained glass window could then be soldered together. Most often lead was used as a part of this process and to this day, most stained glass windows do contain lead. The soldering was an intricate process and more times than not, there would be small imperfections. This was often considered to be an important part of the process and although perfection was usually sought, it would be centuries before this could be attained.
Even though today’s stained glass windows that are assembled by machines may be perfect, they lack that special charm that antique windows have. When you are shopping for stained glass windows that are antiques, think for a minute about the hard work that went into creating that work of art. Whether it is a simple floral design or an intricate religious piece, stained glass windows are definitely keepsakes whether you hang them on the wall or actually install them into a window.
The next time you come across a stained glass window, think about purchasing it to preserve this form of artwork. They can beautify any home, and there is nothing quite like these unique works of art. They make wonderful conversation pieces and can be used just about anywhere in the home.
It is a lot of fun to collect many different stained glass windows and to see if you can end up finding the same designer’s work again.
